WHAT IS A PEOPLE GROUP?
An ethno-linguistic group with a common self-identity that is shared by the various members. For strategic purposes it is the largest group within which the Gospel can spread without encountering barriers of understanding or acceptance. Usually there is a common history, customs, family and clan identities , as well as marriage rules and practices, age-grades and other obligation covenants, and inheritance patterns and rules are some of the common ethnic factors defining or distinguishing a people. What they call themselves may vary at different levels of identity, or among various sub-groups.
With a world population of 7.8 Billion people, People Groups enable missionary efforts to be organized and strategically do the most good. In the last 30 years, organizations have been able to identify millions of People Groups from among the billions of people on the planet. While some of the estimates may vary, the consensus is the same; we are facing a task unfinished and the urgency is greater than ever before.
There are between 11,730 and 17,450 People Groups in the world.
Within the People Groups of the world, up to 7,406 People Groups are Unreached
Total population within the Unreached People Groups is estimated as high as 4.6 Billion people.
Within the People Groups of the world, up to 3,036 People Groups are Unengaged
Total populations within the Unengaged People Groups is estimated as high as 275 Million people.
A people group is considered unreached (UPG) when there is no indigenous community of believing Christians able to engage this people group with church planting. Technically speaking, the percentage of evangelical Christians in this people group is less than 2 percent.
Unreached people groups are unengaged (UUPG) when there is no church planting strategy, consistent with evangelical faith and practice, under way. Gathering believers and planting churches are the keys to establishing an effective and multiplying presence among these people groups.
Most (97%) of the world's unreached people are located geographically in what some scholars call The 10/40 Window from West Africa across Asia between 10 degrees latitude north of the equator to 40 degrees north. 60% of unreached people groups live in countries closed to missionaries from North America. Over 1,000 unreached people groups are NOT in the 10/40 Window, these total over 80 million individuals.
