Federal, state, and local emergency management experts and other official preparedness organizations all agree that "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes. Here's what to do.
Immediately DROP where you are onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and allows you to stay low while crawling to a safer place.
COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand. If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it. If nothing is around you, crawl towards an interior wall (away from windows).
Stay on your knees and bend over to protect your vital organs from harm.
HOLD ON until shaking stops. If you are under shelter, hold onto it with one hand and be ready to move if your protective shelter begins to shift.
If you have no protective sheltering, hold onto your head and neck with both arms and hands until shaking stops.
