Circular Orbit Stability

A particle in an unstable circular orbit in a rotating magnetosphere. The orbit is unstable to the slightest perturbation and can be seen to stray farther and farther away from its equilibrium orbit after it has been disturbed.

A particle in a stable circular orbit in a rotating magnetosphere. The orbit is stable to small perturbations and can be seen to oscillate about its equilibrium circular orbit. The particle describes epicycles about a guiding center which moves along the circular orbit.

Eigenmodes of the shearing sheet - Hall-MRI and stable waves

A visualization of the time evolution of the four exact eigenmode solutions obtained in the shearing sheet approximation. These modes represent an exponentially decaying and growing Hall-MRI mode and two oscillatory modes that are polarized.

A cartoon-strip visualization the two positive branch eigenmodes of the shearing sheet with non-ideal effects for two sets of the Hall diffusivity. The dumbbell represents the amplitude of the net velocity vector. Time flows from left to right. The black arrows show direction of polarization.
