80 years after it was released (in 1946), the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" retains its position as the best Christmas movie ever produced. Some would even say it is the best movie ever produced. As a Catholic, I reluctantly agree. Why the reluctance? Because I never liked it as a child when I was forced to watch it every Christmas season. It seemed so corny with the angel as an old fart. Seeing it again recently with fresh eyes, I am shocked by how Catholic the movie is. First of all, it has many references to Catholic traditions without overtly stating it. Although you don't see George Bailey go to Midnight Mass, he does come to believe in Angels, he is devoted to his wife named "Mary" who intercedes for him with prayer, together with their large family.
