1980s spent as gigging, composing musician, learning advanced music theory, live sound engineering and basic audio recording. Plus general studies across a wide range of fields including computer technologies.
Early 1990’s spent one year on advanced sound engineering course in recording studio facility in Buckhaven.
Rapidly became expert and tutor to others. Rekindled interest in computing technologies.
Mid 1990’s Experimented extensively with emergent digital media computing technologies, advanced midi, compositional and algorithmic sequencing, digital audio recording, non-linear editing and real-time manipulation of control data.
This led to my own Recording Studio, Studio 2000 where I produced numerous audio projects, from basic demo recordings to high end album production for the, at then, world championship winning Grampian Police Pipe Band among others.
Mid to late 1990’s - After I relinquished my interest in Studio 2000, I had become disenchanted with the music world and I looked for new ways in which to improve and evolve myself. The transition from digital audio to digital video was a very easy one for me. My decades of experience in sequencing midi and digital audio was unleashed as affordable digital media workstations became available. As ever I strove to maintain a position at the “bleeding edge” of these technologies. I developed my interest in visual art producing a series of complex images that proved very popular and sold copies both locally and in other countries.
In the late 90’s some of my online digital art was noticed by French arts establishment Culture Commune in Loos near Lille (similar to the DCA) and in 1999 I was invited to perform a live action “VJ” set as part of their arts festival. My initial 30min presentation was so well received in rehearsal that the Centre Director requested that I perform with the real-time multi-media technology throughout the entire 4 and half hour live televised event. I did this to great acclaim.
1999/2000 My successful foray in this area led me to my first film production project using some of these same technologies. My 40min film Godsend created great interest and had to be shown a number of times including at the DCA and I was invited by Kodak to attend the Canne film festival 2000 as their guest, this resulted in huge amounts of positive publicity for myself, for my beloved city and for Scotland. Independently valued at over £250,000 worth of airtime and newspaper coverage. I met many industry movers and shakers there. I was also given a Scottish Screenwriters award for this.
2000 Hired by Dundee Contemporary Art Centre to complete 6 month film project “Dundee Millennium on Film” I completed this project delivering 15 complete short films on the subject which I also helped promote, making the resultant show at DCA the most successful and socially inclusive to that date. This project was funded by The Millennium Commission, National Lottery, Scottish Screen, Dundee City Council and the European Union.
2001/2002 I Produced “Godsend II” full feature length movie with similar results ie trip to Canne with a number of the cast and crew plus lots of publicity etc. at this time I also experimented with digital distribution although internet speeds and technologies were less well suited to this task back then.
Around this time a multimedia project I had been commissioned to produce by Dundee University, Microcomputer Department, Human Interface Section won the esteemed I.S.A.A.C. award for best assisted communications software. I also wrote several online learning modules for ICT
The mid 2000’s saw me producing Digital Signage for Fat Sam’s and documentary or multimedia work for Dundee and St Andrews University as well as charities and other organisations such as Alzheimer’s Scotland, Tayside Healthcare Action Trust , NHS and others.
2004/2005 saw the production of my Magnum Opus “Bored of the Rings” A trilogy of feature length films parodying LOTR. Shot all over Scotland and with a large cast and had many logistical obstacles. It was shown at numerous film festivals and distributed freely online using a variety of digital distribution platforms, downloads were in excess of 1 million when this project was effectively retired in 2006. I also got another award for this.
I continued to produce multimedia and software for a variety of purposes, including vital communication software for people suffering injuries that impede communication. I also produced documentary material for various organisations.
2011/2012 I worked with some friends to produce a triple concept album of music with accompanying art "ARCANA MENTIS DEUM" which also was presented as an art exhibition.
I resolved to produce another full feature length film, this time based on William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. Called “Tambo and Juliet” it was shot in Dundee and featured strong local accents and a local cast. The first showing of this film was in spring 2013 at Dundee Contempory Arts centre and sold out the main 400 seat cinema in just 36 hrs. a full month before it was to be shown. It has since enjoyed capacity audiences elsewhere and is now also available online.
2014 In this year I endeavored to expand my network of contacts and be of service to my community and country by documenting many referendum related events as well as producing other videographic material. I produced more than a hundred videos that year. My personal YouTube channel is the repository for these and has had many hundreds of thousands of views.
Recently I have mostly produced works for charitable organisations as this is a good fit for my social conscience.
2021 saw the Production of Fuckington Street - a feature length puppet movie.
This is a Lockdown Movie, I wanted to overcome the creative purgatory of our Covid restricted world as we wait for normal life to begin again, so cardboard sets, puppets and animation, voice actors and more were used to safely produce a feature length piece of entertainment. It was filmed entirely at home in a tenement flat, and features an extensive soundtrack of original music. Voice actors provided multiple character voices safely and remotely.
I’m sure there is much more that I have forgotten to mention but I don’t pay much attention to past efforts or awards, today and tomorrow interest me more.
A huge amount of online material about me is available by simply searching Google for “Glenn Millar” and “gomni”
