Gold is an 2022 Indian Malayalam-language comedy drama film written, directed and edited by Alphonse Puthren. It was jointly produced by Supriya Menon of Prithviraj Productions and Listin Stephen of Magic Frames. The film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara, along with an ensemble supporting cast of Deepti Sati, Mallika Sukumaran, Lalu Alex, Ajmal Ameer, Baburaj, Shammi Thilakan, Shanthi Krishna, Jagadish, Krishna Sankar, Roshan Mathew, Vinay Forrt, Shabareesh Varma and Saiju Kurup.[1]
In addition to writing, editing and directing the film, Puthren also worked on the stunt choreography, visual effects, color grading, and animation titles of the film. It marks his return to direction after seven years since Premam (2015). Principal photography commenced in September 2021 and ended in June 2022.

Initially set for worldwide theatrical release during Onam, in September 2022, it was deferred due to delays in the post-production and eventually opened in theatres on 1 December 2022, where it received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and became a box-office bomb.[2][3]
"Danger" Joshi. S Kunjan, who owns a mobile shop, purchases a new car owing to a marriage alliance, that is almost fixed with Radha. However on the delivery day, Joshi and his mother find that someone has parked a pickup truck with a load of portable speakers. Joshi complains to the police, but they're busy and decide to look into it slowly. The next morning, Joshi discovers that the small boxes inside the truck are not portable speakers, but gold bars painted as speakers. Joshi, who believes that he has struck gold, literally, buys a gold furnace from an acquaintance and melts one speaker. The police arrive to investigate, but decide to leave the truck due to unavailability of ground space in the police station.
Boss Freddy's men arrive at Joshi's house to silently take the truck away, but Joshi finds and thrashes them. Upon knowing the location of the truck, Sumangali and Unnikrishnan try to retrieve the gold themselves, along with Usman, but to no avail. Joshi's wedding alliance is also called off since Shaji unknowingly admitted to Radha's parents that the complex will be blasted with dynamite once it is transferred to Suneesh. Meanwhile, the police make space at the police station and inform Joshi that they will take the truck the next day, in the evening. Unnikrishnan cancels Sumangali's marriage as he learns that Shaji and Suneesh only wanted the dowry and transfer of the shopping complex.
Production began with a pooja ceremony on 8 September 2021. Originally planned to shoot within Kerala, location was shifted outside of Kerala due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in the state. Produced by Supriya Menon of Prithviraj Productions and Listin Stephen of Magic Frames. Puthren was directing a film after a gap of six years since Premam.[4] With a song sequence choreographed by Puthren's wife Aleena Antony at Fort Kochi, the filming was wrapped up on 14 June 2022. Cinematography was done by Anend C. Chandran and Viswajith Odukkathil.[5] Apart from directing, Puthren also handled editing, stunt choreography, visual effects, and color grading of the film.[6]
The music of the film was composed by Puthren's regular composer Rajesh Murugesan. The soundtrack is distributed by Magic Frames Music. The song "Hands Up Zindagi" contains a reprised version of the Hindi song "Zindagi Ek Safar Hai" from Andaz (1971).
Initially, the film was scheduled for a theatrical release on 8 September 2022 on the occasion of Onam.[7][8][9] Subbiah Shanmughan of SSI Productions distributed the Tamil and Malayalam version of the film in Tamil Nadu.[6] The film completed censoring on 28 November 2022, with a runtime of 2 hours 45 minutes. With that, the release date was announced to be on 1 December 2022.[10] Due to dubbing and censoring delays, the Tamil dubbed version was released only a days later on 2 December 2022.[11] The digital rights of the film were bagged by Amazon Prime Video[12] and satellite rights were sold to Sun TV Network.
Princy Alexander of Onmanorama appreciated the movie for portraying its brilliance on a man's inner psyche for luxuries in life. If Premam was a love story and Neram focused on a man's tryst with time, Gold definitely does justice to the film's theme.[13] Manoj Kumar. R of The Indian Express gave 3 out of 5 stars and wrote "How do you enjoy an Alphonse Puthren film? By simply being in the moment. If you expect the narrative to take you someplace else, you might be left disappointed. Instead, if you choose to enjoy what the film is offering you at any given moment, you will find entertainment. Like life, in Alphonse's films, it's not the destination but the journey that matters."[14]
Rajesh (Feroz Khan) was a motorcycle stuntman in a circus and is now a thief, expert in breaking open treasuries. In one such robbery, he is being watched by police inspector Amjad Khan (Amjad Khan). Sheela (Zeenat Aman) is a gorgeous disco club dancer and singer. Rajesh and Sheela are in love. Rajesh has not disclosed to Sheela that he is a thief. Inspector Amjad Khan arrests Rajesh for theft after he is seen by an officer at a traffic accident. The court sentences Rajesh to two years' imprisonment. Sheela is devastated after she realises Rajesh was a thief. Rajesh meets Vikram in jail. The evil brother-sister duo, Vikram (Shakti Kapoor) and Jwaala (Aruna Irani) seek revenge against crime boss Rakka (Amrish Puri), who cheated Jwaala and siphoned her money.
Meanwhile, Amar (Vinod Khanna) is an ace crime member in Rakka's gang who revolts against Rakka. He is a widower with a daughter Tina (Natasha Chopra) studying in a boarding school. However, before quitting Rakka's gang, Amar has committed a crime, masked, and inspector Amjad Khan is investigating that case. Amar saves Sheela from a gang of rowdy bikers. They meet regularly as Sheela likes Amar's daughter Tina. Soon, Amar begins to love Sheela, who does not reciprocate because she still loves Rajesh. After a short time, Amar and Sheela get together. Rajesh completes his jail sentence. While returning, he meets Vikram who again reminds him of the deal to rob Rakka. During the conversation, Amar incidentally reaches the site and a fist fight ensues between Amar and Vikram. While fleeing, Vikram swears revenge against Amar. Thus Rajesh and Amar meet for the first time. Rajesh takes Amar to introduce him to Sheela; Sheela and Amar pretend as if they do not know each other since they don't want Rajesh to unnecessarily suspect them.
Later, Vikram's goons kidnap Amar's daughter and beat Amar, who is hospitalized. In return for Amar and his daughter's safety, Rajesh agrees to do Vikram's job. He nurses Amar back to normal and soon they turn thick friends. Amar promises Rajesh he will support him in this one last robbery. They plan to shift to London after the robbery with the money. They concoct a scheme whereby Amar would steal gold bars and jewellery from a safe, phone the police, let Rajesh take over, get arrested, and get a prison term for about 12 to 18 months. After his release, he will join Amar in the UK. Things don't go according to plan as Rajesh gets arrested for killing Rakka, while Amar and Sheela reach London with the money. Rajesh construes that Amar deliberately framed him so that he can get Rajesh out of the way, keep all the money (as well as Sheela) for himself. Rajesh escapes from jail and reaches London to apprehend Amar. After a brief tussle, Rajesh realizes the truth and that Amar did not frame him. Vikram and his goons reach London to take revenge against Rajesh and Amar. In the climax of the movie, Amar sacrifices his life to save Rajesh, Sheela and Tina from getting killed by Vikram.
To draw shock from the audience, a scene was included with the calculated decimation of a Mercedes-Benz in an underground parking lot. This was at a time when not many in India had seen a Mercedes, let alone sat in one.
Feroz Khan initially asked Amitabh Bachchan to play the role of Amar. Amitabh replied he would be available in 6 months, according to Feroz, but Feroz could not wait that long. So the role of Amar went to Vinod Khanna.[8]
Biddu was the music director for the song "Aap Jaisa Koi", which introduced him and Pakistani singer Nazia Hassan to Indian films. The first initial song Biddu recorded for Qurbani was a Hindi version of a Boney M. song. When Nazia Hassan and Zoheb Hassan heard it, they refused saying they didn't want to sing a copy. They insisted they wanted an original song. A reluctant Biddu asked them what they had in mind. That's when "Aap Jaisa Koi" was born.
Feroz Khan met Biddu and Nazia Hassan at a party hosted by a close friend in England. Nazia's parents insisted Feroz listen to Nazia sing. Feroz did and was highly impressed. But Feroz had his eye on the International star Biddu to score a song for Qurbani. Biddu was reluctant to score music for an Indian film. It was with sincere persistence and Feroz telling Biddu to do it for his mom who lived in India. Feroz also played the Bangalore card with Biddu since both Feroz and Biddu both hailed from Bangalore.
Its songs were popular and the movie sold the most number of records and tapes in 1980. The music and songs ushered in the "Disco Revolution" of the Indian subcontinent that lasted until the mid-1980s.[11] "Aap Jaisa Koi", sung by Nazia Hassan and produced by Biddu, had a strong impact on audiences.
