Overview
The Wilmington Go and Chess Club meets regularly on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00pm at Cape Fear Games in Wilmington, NC. We usually meet in associated The Sideboard café next door, depending on where we can find available space. Look for the table with chess and Go boards! We encourage beginners and love to help each other become better players. There is no cover charge, however we ask that you support our host by patronizing their cafe and game store when you attend. We greatly appreciate how they have encouraged our club to grow.
Go is a strategy board game for two players in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. The game was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago and is believed to be the oldest board game continuously played to the present day. It can be played on boards of various sizes (larger boards giving longer and more complicated games). Typical sizes of board are grids of 9x9, 13x13 or 19x19 lines on a wooden board.
Chess is a well known strategy board game for two players. It is played on a board with 64 squares. Each player starts the game controlling 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The object of the game is to entrap the opponents king.
Players of all ages and skill levels are welcome, including beginners.
Play is casual. Socializing is encouraged.
Free lessons are available.
Boards and stones/pieces are provided.
Just show up and have some fun while improving your playing skills.
