Prof Gnanamoorthy is currently the Institute Chair Professor, IITM and Sr Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras. His teaching and research interests are Architected Multi Material Design and Manufacturing, Sustainable Materials in Modern Mobility Surface Engineering, Damage Tolerant & Tribo Design, Advanced Materials & Product Design, Failure & Root Cause Analysis, Design with Polymer and Nanocomposities, Network Composites & Foam Structures, Machine Elements (Bearings & Gears), Special Purpose Test Machine Design, and Behavior of implant materials.

Prof Gnanamoorthy received his Doctor of Engineering (Dr Engg) degree from Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan, and served at the prestigious Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Japan, as a regular employee before joining as a Faculty at IIT Madras in 1997.

Prof Gnanamoorthy has published more than 280 original research publications in reputed International Journals and Conferences. His research publications were cited in about 2600 research publications worldwide. He has guided more than 20 research scholars (PhD & MS by research) and holds a patent on an innovative surface modification process for surface nanocrystallization and fatigue life improvement. He has successfully completed many sponsored research projects for Government organizations such as NRB, ISRO, DST, IGCAR and offered consultancy services to reputed Industries in India and Abroad.

Prof Gnanamoorthy is an Institute Chair Professor and Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE). He is the Life Member of various professional bodies, IIM, TSI, AMM, PMAI, MRSI, SBM and FPSI.

He is on the International Advisory Board of Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers, and serves on a number of Government, Academic, and Industry committees and advisory bodies associated with the development of new Institutes, curriculum improvement and new product development. He has also served as an Expert Member of Engineering Education for Next Generation Global Engineers, Japan and part of the 'Global Pro-Active Root Technology Program - Doctoral Program for World-Leading Innovative & Smart Education' project supported by Govt of Japan. He is recognized for his contributions in new academic program development and is awarded 'Honorary Liaison Professor, Nagaoka UT, Japan' and 'WISE Program Promoter, Nagaoka UT, Japan'.

Prof Gnanamoorthy, served as the Former & Founder Director of IIITDM Kancheepuram, and established a state of the art of green campus at the outskirts of Chennai and is an architect of Design Centric Engineering and Smart Manufacturing (Industry 4.0) Academic Programs in India. He has also served as the Mentor Director for IIITDM Kurnool, AP and Director i/c for the Central Institute for Classical Tamil, Chennai.
