The Green Mountain Weavers and Spinners Guild's purpose is to connect with other weavers and spinners; provide fellowship and assistance; challenge and enable members in the continuance of self-education and refinement of skills; and to share and experience the wider world of fiber arts.
We generally meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm at All Saints Episcopal Church in North Adams, MA (the little building to the side of the main church). We have special study groups on relevant topics as well! Check out our calendar of events and our Facebook page for more!
In 1971 six people took a weaving course presented by the Vermont Extension Service in Bennington. When the course ended they formed the Green Mountain Weavers and Spinners Guild in order to encourage one another to continue their self-education. Since that time, guild membership has grown to include spinners and weavers of varied levels of experience who come from Southwestern Vermont, Western Massachusetts, and Eastern New York.
Guild members include weavers, spinners, and students of fiber arts. Members' interests range from spinning llama, alpaca, wool, chiengora, and cotton using wheels and drop spindles, to weaving Navaho and Shaker reproduction textiles, and weave structures in Americana and foreign-style textiles. We experiment with the use of wools, blended fibers, chenille, cotton, and more.
The guild also has study groups to explore the history of hand produced textiles and yarns, weaving structures, and methods of dyeing fiber. We have strived to develop personal libraries on all subjects related to the fiber arts and textiles. Members have done everything from making repairs and replacement parts, to building looms and spinning wheels from scratch.
We also have winter workshops, and a February Spin-in. We always welcome visitors and new members.
