About Gloucester Yoga

Gloucester Yoga's MISSION is to  assist people of all body types and fitness levels to create, fine tune, or continue their yoga practice for greater health, happiness, and well-being.

Since yoga is so much more than the physical poses, mental and spiritual aspects of yoga are woven into each class.  Whether you practice yoga to increase flexibility, relieve stress, enhance your mental clarity, or to improve your overall health, Gloucester Yoga respects what is right for you and will teach, encourage, and coach you on your journey.

Strength & Stability Flow

Join us at Yorktown Yoga and Wellness weekly at 9:15 for Strength & Stability Flow.  This is an alignment-focused practice where you can safely explore your edge.  Longer holds will provide you time to deepen your pose for improved posture and balance while building skeletal strength.  Each week there will be a pose of emphasis.  Sun salutations and warrior sequences are part of this class as well. In this breath-led practice you will be encouraged to find your peace in each pose as you connect your mind, body, and spirit.

I encourage you to come on out and make this class part of your routine to strengthen, stay strong, and age gracefully!  This class is also available virtually.

Garden of Zen is very welcoming, has a large spacious studio, supportive instructors, and a variety of classes from beginner to advanced and physically charged to chilling out.

NANCY SESSOMS, E-RYT 500

Nancy started her training in 2012, teaching in 2013 and in January 2020 earned the designation of E-RYT 500. Nancy is certified by Dr. Loren Fishman to teach his 12 pose program for osteoporosis.

Living in Gloucester County, Virginia, Nancy felt the need for an environment where one could feel safe, quiet their mind, and bring movement into their body in a way accessible to them.  So in June 2016 Nancy opened the first yoga studio in the County - a small studio in Hayes, VA.  Her plan was to "grow the business" and hand off to someone else down the road.  In response to the pandemic, in 2020 the instructors transitioned to live streamed classes but things never recovered sufficiently and in May 2023 she closed the studio.

Nancy will continue to teach a couple classes virtually and in-person private sessions.  She will guide you along your path as you discover yoga’s healing powers and what it means to you.

As a third-generation scoliotic child, with a moderate “S” curve, Nancy started floor exercise early in her life to keep her back and body strong. After running track in high school and continuing on for several decades thereafter, she found that her maturing body yearned for a physical workout program without the repetitive impact to her spine. After consulting with Dr. Fishman, she added several poses to her daily practice which have improved the thoracic scoliotic curve.

Having been diagnosed with osteoporosis, another personal purpose for yoga has surfaced. Since yoga has been proven to slow or reverse the effects of bone loss, she enrolled in Dr. Fishman's second study in mid-January 2020 and has practiced the 11 poses (plus savasana) almost every day.   After one year of practicing Dr. Fishman’s 12 poses her scan showed improvement!  Osteoporosis downgraded to osteopenia!!!  After 2 years even BETTER!  For details, go to the Bone Health tab.

Aside from the proven physical benefits of yoga, she embraces yoga as a lifestyle and believes in its efficacy to find one’s stillness and peace within.

Nancy grew up in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. She earned a business degree from CNU and retired from NASA after 35 years with the Federal Government. She is a wife and mother and currently resides in Hayes, Virginia, with her very supportive husband, their  pug, Willow, and cat, Rhett.
