Procedures of Teaching

I would start by creating an engaging atmosphere through a brief warm-up conversation, encouraging students to talk about their daily routines. This would help them connect the lesson to their own lives. I’d then introduce the key vocabulary using a PowerPoint presentation, showcasing clear images for each topic. Next, I would guide students through group activities, where they would match pictures to vocabulary words, followed by a gap-fill exercise to practice forming sentences with the new vocabulary. Throughout, I would monitor students’ progress, offering feedback and ensuring they are comfortable with using the vocabulary in both controlled and creative contexts. This structured approach, combining visuals, contextual examples, and interactive group activities, would help students build a strong foundation in everyday vocabulary.

Time management and organizing activities

Managing a class is not too difficult, but it does come with its challenges, especially given the limited time I have with the students. One of the main struggles is gauging each student's individual level, as it can vary widely. This is why group activities are often the best approach, as they allow students to support one another. Since my class consists of Grade 10 students, not all of them come from FS (Future School), meaning some have lower English proficiency. Because of this, it's important to use engaging teaching strategies that help students easily grasp the lesson. The goal is to foster an environment where students can support each other, compare answers, and build a better understanding of the topic together. This collaborative approach helps bridge the gap between varying skill levels and ensures everyone stays involved in the learning process.

Classroom Management

Classroom management begins with setting the right tone from the start, usually by greeting the class with a friendly "How are you?, How’s your day going?" to create a welcoming atmosphere. After that, I like to engage the students with a motivational activity to get them energized and ready for the lesson. This could be a fun game or a short video to wake them up and shake off any sleepiness before diving into the main content. Once they're focused, I proceed with the presentation of the lesson, making sure to explain the key concepts clearly. Next comes the practice phase, where I guide students through various activities, often using pair or group work to encourage collaboration and active participation. Finally, we move into the production stage, where students apply what they've learned through performance tasks, allowing them to demonstrate their understanding and skills. This structured approach helps maintain a positive classroom environment and ensures students are engaged throughout the lesson.

Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school

Personally, the most challenging aspect of teaching is coming up with activities that keep students engaged. It’s crucial to know your class and understand each student’s needs so you can adjust your teaching strategies accordingly. As for staying at the designated school, there wasn’t much of a problem, particularly because Dong Thap University assigned each foreign student a Vietnamese student assistant. This made things easier, especially when there was a need to translate material into Vietnamese. The student assistants were always available to help with translations during class, ensuring that communication was clear. Additionally, there were no issues with scheduling. We were given the class schedules a week in advance, which provided ample time to prepare lesson plans for each teaching demo. This structure made it easier to stay organized and focused on delivering quality lessons without unnecessary stress.
