[Background and Objectives]

SilvaCarbon Workshop Group Photo - USGS Visitor Center

Monitoring deforestation and forest degradation is key to assessing change in carbon storage, and satellite remote sensing is a cost effective way to monitor forest change over large areas for national reporting.

The participating countries have been working on methods for forest change analysis with the University of Maryland and SilvaCarbon since 2013. As requirements and circumstances in different regions are unique, different approaches have been taken. This workshop will give participants an opportunity to exchange the experiences, challenges and benefits of detecting forest cover change and will facilitate collaboration between the participants and other countries through capacity transfer.

This workshop will familiarize scientists with the University of Maryland methodology and estimates of forest cover change and will show ongoing applications of optical satellite data for mapping forest cover and forest cover change from the participating countries.
