Food is lost or wasted for a variety of reasons: bad weather, processing problems, overproduction and unstable markets. This causes food waste before it arrives in a grocery store, while overbuying, poor planning and confusion over labels and safety contribute to food waste at stores and in homes.
Some of the most commons items that are wasted are bread and bread products, that’s because consumers do not understand “best before” and bread is thrown away while still edible; also fruit and vegetables are wasted because consumers cook too much egg, pasta, rice… and then the fruit is spoiled. The 45% of the fruits and vegetables that are recollected in all the world are wasted.
The statistics are that 30-40% of all food is produced in the U.S. is wasted each year (63 million tons food), that means 40 tons every 20 seconds; and 76% of food waste goes into landfills, food rotting in landfills causes methane, a greenhouse gas bad for the environment. Also, every year in all the world, we waste 263 millions of tonnes of meat which equate to 75 milions of cows.
Now will share some ideas that we can do to reduce food waste:
- If there is food leftover, store it in the fridge for another day.
- Not cooking too much of the food you're actually going to eat.
- Buy “ugly” fruit and vegetables. Sometimes fruit and vegetables are edible but “ugly” and nobody buys them; that’s a problem because shops throw them away and that produces food waste. If we buy that fruit, we can reduce food waste.
-Make a composter.
-Cook recipes with the leftovers that we haven’t eaten. (Like if one day you cook spinach don’t throw them, because you can cook a spinach omelet).
