About the Candy Around the World Project

The Candy Around the Project is one of a forthcoming series of Global Exploration projects produced by Director of Educational Technology Lucy Gray and teachers at North Shore Country Day School. This project is inspired by a recent New York Times Magazine series on candy around the world and we will be studying all aspects candy between now and December 2018.

Here are important details about this project.

  • Teachers and students from around the world are invited to join this project.
  • The project runs from November 1, 2018, to December 31, 2018.
  • Students from ages 3-18 are welcome to participate (approximately prekindergarten through secondary grade levels).
  • Teachers must register and will receive regular updates and reminders.
  • Classes do not have to participate in all of the activities. Choose which ones best fit your goals and schedule.
  • If preferred, teachers can supplement our planned activities with additional ones of their own choosing. See our resources for ideas.
  • The culminating artifacts for this project will be several eBooks containing research, stories, and artwork.
  • Additional live activities may be added to the schedule ( e.g Skype with a dietitian etc.), so stay tuned for updates.

Standards and Frameworks Addressed

PISA 2018 Global Competence

From OECD's website

What is global competence?

Global competence is the capacity to examine local, global and intercultural issues, to understand and appreciate the perspectives and world views of others, to engage in open, appropriate and effective interactions with people from different cultures, and to act for collective well-being and sustainable development.

ISTE Standards for Students and Educators

This project will help students meet Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructors, Creative Communicator and Global Collaborator standards. In particular with the Global Collaborator standard, students will be able to:

Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.

  • Students use digital tools to connect with learners from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, engaging with them in ways that broaden mutual understanding and learning.
  • Students use collaborative technologies to work with others, including peers, experts or community members, to examine issues and problems from multiple viewpoints.
  • Students contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and responsibilities to work effectively toward a common goal.
  • Students explore local and global issues and use collaborative technologies to work with others to investigate solutions.

This project will help educators meet Learner, Citizen, Collaborator and Facilitator standards. In particular, the two following indicators within the Collaborator standard will be addressed:

    • Use collaborative tools to expand students' authentic, real-world learning experiences by engaging virtually with experts, teams and students, locally and globally.
    • Demonstrate cultural competency when communicating with students, parents and colleagues and interact with them as co-collaborators in student learning.

Common Core ELA Standards

This project will help teachers address Common Core standards including those related to writing and informational text. Please consult the Common Core website for specific standards for your grade level.
