Hello,
my name is GLEN (he/him), I am from Albania. My relevant experience in media is filmmaking? I do not if my short college movie counts as experience, but nevertheless I am a big admirer of visual arts, films, and much more. For example, I tried visual poetry, a branch of poetry that combines words and typewriting with something more visual than readable. It is a fun exercise and helps to explore further visual arts in general. I like exploring art, nourishing my curious mind with a bit of everything that I can put my hand on.
Furthermore about me is that I have a collector's coin that is worth a pretty crazy amount of money, three pairs of glasses, even if I only use one and I know by heart the 10 first digits of Pi (3.1415926535).
I have a ton of influences and inspirations, (most of them filmmakers), here's a shotgun of big names and how they influenced me:
Bong Joon Ho: Korean filmmaker, the inspiration I mainly draw from him is his storytelling, and his ability to create an immersive universe with mise-en-scene and incredibly well-written characters.
Chantal Akerman: Belgium filmmaker and feminist activist, I have a huge admiration as well for her movies than for her activist movements. Her practice of cinema, and how every image, even the more banal ones, can explore art as well as ourselves. I feel like I learn a lot from each movie I see from her.
Alan Resnick: He is an American filmmaker and visual artist, he is known for short experimental films he did for [Adult Swim]. His art turns around exploring and commenting on the internet and social media. He uses all types of weird techniques or mediums to make his visual art, whether YouTube, to creating other websites as extensions to his short films or films everything from security cameras. He inspires me to explore filmmaking and how to treat new media technology and information overload.
Ray Bradbury: More for his Creative writing tips than his books, the way he sees writing and the tips he gives young writers is very inspiring. He heavily influenced my creative process and how I handle motivation and white page syndrome.
I tried to be concise with everybody, but in brief, everyone of them influenced me on how to write and create, experiment or comment/present subjects like information overload, feminism, media, grief, community and so much more.
Maybe you have guessed that I like filmmaking by now. When it comes to media creation, I like them to be in conversation with other arts, and mimic or be influenced by other mediums. I try with my creation to be honest, to convey the most interesting and raw feelings I can, and I try to engage directly with the themes I work with. My working process is to always go around with what I am stuck on, either erase it or see from what angle I can engage with it. One of my math teachers once said that if you're stuck on a number, don't try to force yourself into solving it, but turn around to see if there's another way to go through it. In a way, think a bit outside the box and always treat your themes honesty.
In brief, I try to find new ways to abord themes and mix them with my own experience, which helps me better understand but also creat something that I feel has a direct connection between me and the subject.
That is an interesting question, what are my short-term and long-term goals as a media creator? I am still not sure as for the long-term, I'll try for sure to be a filmmaker or work in the cinema industry. However, I am also open to seeing where the future brings me, who knows, I could have a change of heart and become like a singer, writer, or a tiger circus trainer. For the short-term I aim to go to university, explore as much as I can, have fun with filmmaking, and profit from my teen-ish age by going out, making friends, discovering the world and managing the new things I am confronted with. As a media creator, I could see myself exploring media creation, and trying my hands at what I find interesting, researching new ways to articulate things, etc.
From what I saw from the course outline, I'm pretty enthusiastic to see what the audio workshops are about. I have never fully put my hand on audio (especially how do you mix and deal with it on post-prod.), and I think it could be interesting to see what it is about. I anticipate the course to help me see a wider angle on how to use different tools. Even if I had some camera and audio workshops, I am curious to see how redoing those opens my comprehension of it and as a maybe future media creator to seek a better understanding of wider ways to create, and therefore help my art grow.
