Next Gathering: Saturday June 13 at 2-4pm at Central Rock Gym Glastonbury
Advocacy. We advocate to the Glastonbury Public Schools board, EDI council, and other leaders with a goal of ensuring the holistic success and well-being of our children.
Support. We offer a welcoming support group environment for our meetings, giving us the opportunity to discuss and process events in our community. We aim to meet monthly, alternating between in-person and remote sessions.
Networking. We have prioritized shared activities for our children and events for parents. We have also shared experiences with similar groups in neighboring towns!
Education. We focus on ongoing education through books, visual media, and seminars.
We are just getting started! We have held about 5 formal meetings. Each of our meetings involves an opportunity to meet new faces, deepen existing relationships, and support each other through the unique difficulties of raising a child of color in Glastonbury. Right now, we are looking for opportunities to learn and practice skills from Glenn Singleton's Courageous Conversations About Race
Here is a list of activities we have done as a group:
Meet and greet via Zoom and the Welles-Turner library
Met with leaders of the Wethersfield Social Justice Coalition
Attended the April 2025 Wethersfield BIPOC Community Fair
Social gatherings: ladies' lunch, lakeside dinners, pool club cookouts, etc.!
See below for our ideas of potential future activities!
We would welcome partnership with anyone who wants to help us engage in the following activities:
1. Family Empowerment
Ensure Glastonbury parents of color are aware of existing resources to assist them in navigating the school system, advocating for children's needs, and understanding educational rights.
Offer sessions on group-specific topics such as racial identity development, dealing with microaggressions, and fostering resilience.
2. Family Connections
Establish mentorship programs pairing older students of color with younger ones to provide guidance, support, and positive role models.
Create networks connecting parents with resources and each other for mutual support.
3. Family-School-Community Partnerships:
Encourage Glastonbury schools to partner with local BIPOC-owned businesses and cultural institutions
Provide educators a point of contact for seeking family collaboration in hosting diversity- and inclusion-focused events/celebrations
Advocate for curriculum changes that include diverse perspectives and histories.
Work with the school board and administration to address disparities in discipline, academic achievement, and access to opportunities
4. Communication and Awareness:
Publish newsletters highlighting success stories, upcoming events, and important issues affecting families of color in the district.
Create awards to recognize the achievements and contributions of students, parents, and staff in promoting diversity and inclusion.
