Gloria K. Fiero - Artist Statement
"I have been making art for seven decades, responding to what I see by trying to capture how I feel about what I see. Essentially representational until the Covid lockdown, my practice has become increasingly intuitive and abstract. It seeks a balance between imagination and reality, between intention and accident. It is gestural and self-indulgent.
Years of teaching art history have led me to believe there is good art and bad art; there is also boring art. The critical effort to distinguish between these polarities is often superficial. It disregards the reality that some art is lasting in its visual intelligence, its mastery of technique, and its fundamental beauty.
In my paintings, as in my drawings, line assumes a subtle animating presence. My best paintings capture the expressive energy of my best line drawings. Visually challenging, structurally complex, and rich in surface texture, good art astonishes artist and viewer in a mutual experience of self-discovery."
