Winona's Story By: Emily Taylor

Age 16, Beloit Turner High School

Winona’s life didn’t always revolve around hairballs, mice and petting. She used to be a human apprentice to a very well known wizard. She adored watching him work, getting lost in the wonderful world of magic. It was her dream to one day be one of the best wizards, and she always practiced her spells diligently. The wizard always told her that if she worked hard enough, she could achieve her dream. But, all that hard work took a long time and Winona grew impatient. So one day, she was sweeping up the wizard's lair while he was away buying potion ingredients, and she noticed that he had forgotten his wand. She picked it up with the intention of returning it to the wizard, but then she got an idea. She was never allowed to use his wand to cast spells. She always had to use her old beat up wand to practice. This was her one chance to use the wizard’s high quality wand. She waved it around a bit before she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She waved it once more and exclaimed some magic words. The wand shook in her hands and began to glow. In shock, she dropped the wand and a magic green ray shot out of the end. It bounced around the liar until it struck Winona, throwing her to the ground. She suddenly began to shrink and grow hair and whiskers. Her hands became paws and she grew a tail. When it was all over, she went to talk, but only a meow came out. She wandered over to the mirror that laid on the lair floor and glanced at her reflection. Her big, green eyes widened at the sight. She was no longer a young girl, she was now a cat! The magic spell not only transformed her into a cat, it also gave her uniquely covered fur. She jumped with a startled screech like meow, similar to those used in horror movies, when she hears the lair door being opened. She hid behind one of the cauldrons, knowing she was not supposed to use the wizard's wand. As the wizard entered, he came upon his wand laying next to her clothes that were now far too big for her new form. He sighed, figuring out what had happened but, before he could call out her name, she scurried out the cracked door. Ever since then she had been wandering the streets, looking for things to eat and trying to survive. Until the humane society found her and brought her here. Now you could finally give this talented and unfortunate apprentice a home once more by adopting her today.
