Outreach

Through Imperial College and ICTP, I had the occasion to take part in outreach and public engagement activities:

In July 2023, I took part in  the 2023 EAUMP-ICTP School on Enumerative Combinatorics  in Arusha (Tanzania). The School aimed at strengthening combinatorics in East Africa, a topic that is easily accessible and yet little taught and researched.

I worked as Teaching Assistant for the course "Combinatorics, finite fields and geometry" held by Prof. Rodriguez Villegas, and as facilitator of the discussion session on  gender and diversity in science.

In June 2019, I co-organised with Enrica Mazzon the workshop "Fold Band" at the Great Road Exhibition Festival 2019.

We explained how to make modular origami (origami obtained by assembling multiple copies of the same simple unit folded from a single piece of paper).  We used as unit the Sonobe, which allows to build various models of mathematical objects.  The aim was to play with the key mathematical idea of decomposing a complex space/problem into simpler units/steps.

If you want to try yourself, here is a video by Alycia Zimmermann on how to make a Sonobe unit and a Sonobe cube.  On the right, a picture of a Sonobe octahedron I made.

In December 2018 I helped organising the workshop  "GeomeTree Decoration" at the Xmaths Imperial Lates.

We made christmassy decorations in shape of hyperboloids, while showing them that these are doubly ruled surfaces. The aim was to deliver some intuitive ideas about enumerative geometry and its connections with string theory.
