Girls Who Code Savannah mission is to close the gender gap in technology and STEM related careers. We do this by creating a fun, engaging and safe space for girls* to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models, and use Computer Science to change the world. Volunteer instructors provide a learning environment where young women are introduced to fundamental principles, technologies and skills associated with computer programming and Internet technologies.
We are the original chapter in Savannah of the larger, national Girls Who Code organization. We are hosted by Savannah's Creative Coast business incubator, which allows us to include girls from all of Chatham County public middle schools. We run a range of programs including classes throughout the school year, and special workshops in partnership with other institutions in Savannah, including the Jepson Center for the Arts, and University of Georgia's Marine Education Center.
*GWC Savannah includes individuals who were borne born female, but do not identify as female, and those who were not born female but identify as such.
The Women Behind GWC Savannah
Sage Batchelor co-founded Girls Who Code Savannah in 7th grade. Since 2020, Sage has been the primary instructor for all courses, camps and workshops.
Sage attends the Savannah Arts Academy, where she is the primary oboist for the schools's bands and orchestra.
In addition to playing oboe and teaching girls programming skills, Sage is a professional aerial silks performer, and performs every Friday and Saturday night on the waterfront at Savannah's Plant Riverside.
Jennifer Bonnett is the Executive Director of The Creative Coast, where she invited Girls Who Code Savannah to make a home for itself. In addition to running Savannah's business catalyst and innovation center, She is also the Vice President of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Savannah Economic Development Authority.
Jennifer's commitment to supporting the community and women in STEM has made a huge impact on the capacities of our organization. From computers to free lunch for camps, and workshops, more girls are coding because of Jenn.
Kaitlin Lance is Director of Programs & Communication at the Creative Coast, and is the primary point of contact for Girls Who Code Savannah programs, supporting the organization with logistical planning, resources, connections, and opportunities. Kaitlin's hard work and commitment to our program makes it possible for Girls Who Code Savannah to have continuous and important programming.
