Our Mission with MASCO Girls Tennis(MGT) is to build leadership skills and self confidence while being part of a team of talented young women. Life long tennis abilities are developed during this short season. In years to come, we hope that these alumnae can look back and say they loved playing tennis with their friends on the MASCO courts – win or lose.

OVERVIEW
The combined Varsity and Junior Varsity team consists of approximately 20 players. Anyone trying out for the MGT is required to commit 2-4 hours a day (weekdays) for practices and matches rain or shine from late April to mid-June. On certain occasions, some qualified players will attend multiple-hour events on the weekends.
PREPARATION FOR TRY OUTS
In the off season and in preparation for the Spring MGT Tryouts, players are highly encouraged to:
Play matches 1-3+ times a week at least in the two months prior to the tryout
Cross train including arms/legs weight training
Run sprints to simulate short bursts on the court
Pilates, Spinning, Zumba and other core workouts
Participate in tennis clinics/tennis lessons to improve skills/strokes
TRYOUT INFORMATION
To participate in the MGT tryout, players highly recommended to be able to do the following:
Serve
Keep score
Rally and play out points in a match
All players MUST SHOW UP for scheduled days of try outs, even if their registration is in process. To enable accurate identification during the try out, each player will write first and last name on duct tape and apply it to the back of your shirt during try out. For efficiency, you may apply tape before you arrive at try out.
Once the roster is set after the try outs, all players are expected to attend all practices and matches unless previously approved by the coaches.
Check the official season match schedule to confirm your availability if you participate in other extracurricular activities. Once the regular season ends, the Varsity will participate in the State Tournament which can last until the beginning of July. The Junior Varsity will be encouraged to attend in support of the team during the State Tournament matches home and away.
Each player will be notified by Coach Farnham or Coach Scheirey with the results of her tryout.
***************PHYSICALS**************
All athletes must have a physical on file with the high school before tryouts. You will not be allowed to tryout unless you have a physical. This is a mandatory school policy. Please udate your physical and fill out/turn in registration paperwork to Athletic Department. A student whose physical exam expires during the course of a season will become ineligible the day it expires; a new physical must be submitted prior to the start of the next day in order for the student to be considered eligible.
TRY OUT PROCESS FAQS
Q: How many people are usually on the team?
A: Approximately 20 (JV and Varsity).
Q: How will the ladder be established?
A:
+ Try out challenge matches and skills/drills. Depending on weather and time constraints, you may play various play formats (pro-sets, best of five games, etc…)
+ Attitude and Effort - positive attitudes and lots of effort. There is no "I" in "TEAM".
Q: What is the attendance policy?
A: Attendance on the two days of try-outs is mandatory (except for returning MGT players who only need to attend the second day). Even if your paper work and clearance is incomplete, players must come to try-outs to watch, learn and listen. Players missing more than 2 try-out sessions or 3 practices(once the team is selected) without prior approval will be dismissed from the team.
RETURNING VARSITY/JV PLAYERS
All new and returning players must attend tryouts. They will be required to drill and play matches to help establish a current challenge ladder as well as doubles positions. Lower players do not automatically move into spots vacated by graduating seniors.
PRACTICES AND MATCHES
MGT league match schedule for the 2024 Spring North East Conference league.
1. Pending weather/court conditions this year, practices may be indoors fitness/conditioning if courts are unplayable. When the outdoor courts clear, daily practices resume Monday through Friday. MGT practices daily M0N-FRI. Check this GIRLSTENNIS@MASCO website daily for updates on practice scheduled ocation.
2. Practices may consist of conditioning, drills and match play.
3. Other school functions, doctor appointments or other non-school functions must be scheduled after designated workout times or approved by the coach before such appointments are scheduled. Players with jobs should try their best to alter their work schedule in order to accommodate all practices and matches.
4. If unsure of practice, because of weather, substitute, etc, check with your captains and this GIRLSTENNIS@MASCO website for official details.
5. At the beginning of the season, the weather is usually cold. Please be prepared for any type of conditions (warm blankets, mittens, hats, winter coats even sleeping bags sometimes!) for both practices and matches.
CHALLENGE MATCHES
Until TBA, singles players may challenge to move up the ladder. The singles ladder establishes the Varsity #1-3 singles positions and also the #1-2 doubles teams. Once you have beaten a player two out of three times, then she is 'locked out’ from challenging you and you will remain ahead of her on the ladder for the season. Challenge matches played during practice, due to limited court time, best score during 30 minute match with ads and, if tied, 10 point tie breaker. Challenge matches played not during practice are 2 out of 3 sets, no ad, 3rd set is a 10 point tie breaker.

GUIDELINES:
The coaches will facilitate scheduling challenge matches.
Players agree upon where to play and either player may reserve the court at public or private facility. Notify Coach Scheirey or Farnham of time and place as either coach may come to observe the match.
The challenger agrees to split the court fee and pay entire guest fee (if not a member).
Courts should be reserved for 1.5 hours. If there is extra time – USE IT TO PRACTICE!
Scores should be texted to Coach Farnham immediately after the matches including who played who, who won and what was the complete score
We will keep a matrix chart of all matches and scores.
If you beat a player 3 spots ahead of you, everyone bumps down 1(i.e #4 gets beat by #6, #6 becomes #4, #4 becomes#5 and #5 becomes #6).
LADDER MATCHES (#4-15)
May be played before during and after practices (based upon space availability), indoors and outdoors on your own time. You may challenge anyone on your row or one row higher (not including #1-3) Winners continue to climb the ladder. If you lose a ladder match, you must accept and win one from behind you before you can challenge ahead again.
LADDER MATCHES (#1-6)
Matches may be played during practice (based upon space availability) or on your own time. Match length is 2 out of 3 sets or 8 game pro set with AD and a 10 point tie breaker at 6-6 and also for the 3rd set. #1-3 can only challenge up one spot at a time. #4,5,6 must beat 3 before they can challenge #2. #3 must beat #2 before challenging #1.
