GIRLS IN MATH

Girls in Math is a student-run organization led by two Carlmont High School students looking to empower young girls who are interested in mathematics. This year, we are proud to be hosting, for the first time, an online middle school math competition primarily designed for girls in the Bay Area. We see ourselves in many of these young girls and know how it is to be underlooked, especially in a male-dominated field like math. Our central objective for the Girls in Math competition is to inspire more girls to embrace their passion for mathematics and uplift them by fostering their ability to solve problems through innovative and analytical approaches.

OUR MISSION

To inspire girls and other young minds to embrace their passion for mathematics

OUR VISION

For girls and all students to feel like their talents are respected and to uplift them through the development of applicative knowledge that will build the future voices in mathematics

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The Girls in Math competition is an online middle school math competition with two rounds consisting of problems based on algebraic, geometric, and probability foundations. The competition is primarily designated for girls in the Bay Area, but it is a national competition that we encourage anyone from grades 6-8 to join. The competition will be held over Zoom and there will be cutoffs from Round 1. This is an individual competition and the problems are similar in approach and act as great preparation for prestigious middle school and high school math competitions like AMC, BMT, and MOEMS.

Round 1: Pointe Round
With 45 questions in 60 minutes, the Pointe Round is a test of speed and precision.
50% of participants will advance to the next round

Round 2: Forte Round
With 15 questions in 30 minutes, the Forte Round is a test of accuracy and skill.
The top 3 winners will be determined after the Forte Round by using the combined score of both rounds.

*Scores for each round will be released within a week after the competition date.

PRACTICE TESTS

This year, Girls in Math will be releasing two practice tests. The practice tests will be sent out via email and accessible on our website at any time. A few weeks after the practice tests are released, we will host a Zoom seminar to review the questions and solutions to the practice test. We will also teach competition math knowledge and play some fun math games. The Zoom link will be emailed to everyone who has registered for the competition a few days before the seminar date. You can still do the practice tests even if you are not looking to participate in the competition this year. We highly encourage all participants to do the practice tests and attend the seminars.

Practice Test 1
Seminar 1: February 23rd 2-3 p.m. PST

Practice Test 2
Seminar 2: March 3rd 2-3 p.m. PST

2. Communications: All communications and updates will be over email. If you have any questions or concerns, please email girlsinmath.info@gmail.com.

3. Zoom: On the day of the test, Zoom will open 15 minutes before the start time. Students are expected to join 10 minutes before the start time. Instructions and test questions (Google form) are given out 5 minutes before the start time and any students who miss instructions should chat the proctor privately. Students who join more than 10 minutes after the start time will not be let in unless there is an extenuating circumstance (please email and stay in the Zoom lobby). Students must submit all answers through the Google Form and send us a picture of their scratch work before leaving the Zoom Meeting. They must email the picture to girlsinmath.info@gmail.com. The Google form will be closed at the test end time and any pictures emailed 15 minutes after the test end time will not be accepted. Forms without scratch work are not accepted and vice versa.

Scratch work: Answers must be numbered with corresponding question (Ex: 1. Answer). You do not need to write the question, but you must show your work (excluding mental math). Scratch work must be organized and readable.

4. Proctoring: There will be multiple proctors managing the competition. Students are allowed to ask questions after instructions are given, but once the test starts, students are expected to be muted. Students should have their camera on at all times. If a student turns their camera off, they are immediately disqualified. If there are any external issues, please have the student chat the proctor privately.
