GirlGreens is a student-led service that connects food banks and local community gardens to families. Currently, we focus on Butler and Cuyahoga Counties of Ohio, however we have plans to expand across the country. This connection creates a sustainable way for food banks to receive donations. Due to COVID-19, food insecurity rates have skyrocketed in our communities and several of our local food pantries have struggled to receive donations. We wanted to create something to help combat this issue.
GirlGreens helps people locate nearby food banks and community gardens. Whether they are wanting to volunteer at these locations or receive resources, we help to facilitate this process. We also work to build relationships between community gardens and food pantries by matching them based on location. An amount of produce grown by the community garden will be donated to the food pantry.
GirlGreens utilizes a chatbot that is coded through IBM Watson Assistant to simplify this process. We have trained the GirlGreens Helper to respond to four different scenarios: food bank/community garden locations, access to our virtual cookbook, sign ups for our volunteering program, and partnership opportunities for local organizations.
1) Our chatbot, "The GirlGreens Helper" is trained to provide locations, hours, addresses, and additional resources according to user input. Through the use of the intents and entities features provided by IBM Watson Assistant, the GirlGreens Helper is enabled to respond to these situations with information that best fits the user's situation.
2) The GirlGreens Helper directs people to our virtual cookbook which is free to be downloaded! The cookbook features numerous recipes, based off of ingredients that are at grown at community gardens and donated to local food pantries.
3) Volunteers can sign up to aid in the effort by grow producing from their own homes. That produce then goes to food pantries that are struggling to receive donations due to COVID-19.
4) Our platform also fosters a relationship between community gardens and food pantries as we match them depending on their location. Following the match, they are able to share resources-- primarily produce.
