Exercise: "Listen and Build the Schedule"Â
Context: Your group is planning the schedule for a one-day school event. There is a whiteboard with a blank timetable. One person, the "Director," has the full schedule. The "Assistants" must listen to the instructions and write the schedule correctly on the whiteboard.
Goal: Practice comprehension checks, clarification requests, and rephrasing.
Student Roles & Information
The Director (Student 1)
You have the complete, correct schedule for the event. You must give instructions to the Assistants so they can fill in the blank timetable. You cannot show them your card or write for them.
Your Secret Schedule:
10:00 AM: Welcome Speech (in the Auditorium)
11:30 AM: Art Class (in Room 101)
1:00 PM: Lunch Break (at the School Cafeteria)
2:30 PM: Soccer Game (on the Sports Field)
4:00 PM: Movie Time (in the Media Room)
The Assistants (Students 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
You will listen to the Director and work together to write the schedule on the whiteboard. Each of you has a special job to help the group.
Student 2: Time Checker
Your Job: You are focused on the times. You must confirm each time.
Phrases: "Pardon me, what time was the speech?" "So, 2:30 PM, right?"
Student 3: Location Checker
Your Job: You are focused on the places. You must confirm each location and ask for spellings.
Phrases: "Where is the Art Class?" "How do you spell 'Auditorium'?"
Student 4: Activity Checker
Your Job: You are focused on the activities. You must confirm what each event is.
Phrases: "Can you repeat the activity after lunch?" "So, at 4:00, we watch a movie?"
Student 5: Rephraser
Your Job: After the Director gives one instruction, you will rephrase it to check for understanding.
Phrases: "Okay, in other words, at ten we go to the Auditorium for a speech." "Let me see, first we have a speech, then an art class. Is that clear?"
Student 6: Final Verifier
Your Job: You will write on the whiteboard. After the group agrees on an item, you will write it. At the end, you will read the entire schedule back to the Director for final confirmation.
Phrases: "So, I will write 'Soccer Game' now." "Let me read the final schedule back to you..."
Instructions for the Group
Your Goal: Correctly fill out the blank timetable on the whiteboard based only on the Director's instructions.
Rules:
The Director (Student 1) must give instructions one at a time.
The Assistants (Students 2-6) MUST do their jobs. Use your phrases!
The group must agree on each piece of information before the Final Verifier writes it down.
Everyone must use English.
Useful Phrases for the Activity
From the Director:
"The first event is at 10:00 AM."
"It is in the Auditorium."
"The event is the Welcome Speech."
For Clarification (All Assistants):
"Can you say that slowly, please?"
"Pardon me, I didn't hear the time."
"What does 'Media Room' mean?" (Director can rephrase: "It's like a small movie theater.")
For Confirmation (Time/Location/Activity Checkers):
"So, the game is at two thirty?"
"You mean Room 101?"
"The last activity is the movie, right?"
For Rephrasing (Rephraser):
"So, let me confirm. At one o'clock, we eat lunch in the cafeteria."
"In other words, after the art class, we have a break for lunch."
The Final Result: Our Event Schedule
The Final Verifier should write the agreed-upon schedule here for the Director to approve.
Success Check: The Director (Student 1) looks at the finished timetable and says, "Yes, that is 100% correct! Well done, everyone."
