Saroj Khan, the famous and one of the most celebrated choreographers has left us today for heavenly abode.
Saroj Khan earned the title of “Masterji” in Bollywood due to her sincerity towards her profession. She was known to be very strict and sincere about dance irrespective of whom she was choreographing. Saroj Khan made her mark in Bollywood solely on the basis of her own hardwork and dedication. In Spite of having many many difficulties in personal life, Saroj Khan kept her focus on choreography.
Saroj Khan was actually born in a Hindu family in Mumbai. His father was Punjabi and mother was Sindhi and her family had come to Mumbai from Pakistan after partition.
Her original name was Nirmala Nagpal and his father had changed her name as he did not want the rest of the family to know about her dance.
She started her career as a child artist at the age of 3. She used to dance seeing her own shadow and seeing this her mother had taken her to the doctor thinking she was a retard.
Saroj Khan married choreographer B Sohanlal at the age of 13. At that time B Sohanlal was 30 years elder to her and was the father of 4 children. But she never regretted it. B Sohanlal was his Guru as well and she thanked only him for all she could achieve in life. Saroj Khan parted ways with B Sohanlal in 1965.
Saroj Khan had also worked as a nurse and in a telephone company before becoming assistant choreographer. Geeta mera naam in 1974 was her first film as an independent choreographer.
She is the recipient of the maximum number of National Award for Best Choreography with three wins. She also received the American Choreography Award in 2002 for Lagaan .
Saroj Khan choreographed more than 200 films and more than 2000 songs. Some of the iconic songs are "Ek Do Teen" ,"Hawa hawai", "Dola re Dola" and "Tamma tamma".
Saroj Khan's choreography made the filmfare launch best choreographer category for the first time in 1989 for the song “Ek Do Teen” from the film Tezaab which was picturised on Madhuri Dixit .
She had worked with all the superstars including Sridevi, Govinda, Jackie Shroff but Madhuri Dixit washer favourite and her favourite song with Madhuri was Dola re Dola in Devdas.
Saroj Khan had opened a dance academy which has a main center in Mumbai and has many other branches in delhi and Noida.
Friends, Saroj Khan has been an inspiration to many dance lovers and she was one of the very few people who dont just perform the dance but actually live it. Songs choreographed by her will always remind us of her and through them she will always live in our hearts.
