Welcome to the Spalding War Memorial Committee Inc. & Giant Pumpkin & Sunflower Competition — a grassroots, family-friendly community event celebrating gardening, resilience, connection and country spirit in the Mid North of South Australia.

What began as a simple idea to get seeds in the ground has grown into a state-wide competition bringing together families, schools, growers and communities from across South Australia and beyond.

Why This Event Matters

Following ongoing drought and regional hardship, this competition provides a positive focus for our community — encouraging people to get outside, grow something, share stories and reconnect with one another.

From children planting their first sunflower to seasoned growers chasing a giant pumpkin, the competition creates shared purpose, friendly rivalry and genuine social connection.
