2023 - 2024 COURSE SYLLABUS
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
In chorus students will learn about the fundamentals of music literacy, vocal production, choral technique, and performing in an ensemble setting. Chorus will be an opportunity for students to grow as musicians in a safe and supportive environment in accordance with the NC Essential Standards for 6-8th grade music. I’m excited for what we will achieve this year!
II. EXPECTATIONS
1. Be respectful always. Treat other members of the ensemble with respect, you’re working as a team.
2. Be prepared. Come to class on time with your required materials
3. Participate with enthusiasm! Actively pay attention throughout class. Sing with correct posture and technique.
4. No phones/gum/food or drink other than water! Water is allowed and encouraged.
III. REQUIRED MATERIALS
1. 1 Inch black view binder (for your music – will stay in class)
2. 1 subject notebook (to use in class)
3. Pencil (to keep in your binder!)
IV. CONCERTS
After school concerts are a requirement for all chorus students. If a student has an excused absence from a concert, they are able to complete a make-up assignment. Required concert attire will be Chorus t-shirts and blue jeans. Other outfits for concerts may be determined by students depending on the theme of the concert.
CONCERT DATES:
Winter Concert –December 11, 2023 at 7:00pm
All County Chorus – March/April 2024
Spring Concert –May 2024
V. GRADING
Concerts – 50%
This includes:
1. Concert attendance
2. Participation at concert and dress rehearsal
3. Conduct at concert and dress rehearsal
Classwork – 50%
This includes:
1. Daily Participation – Students are expected to participate in class daily.
2. Notebook/Binder Checks – For every piece of music we work on, students are expected to number all measures, mark their part, and make any other markings we discuss in class. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with their markings when they are absent. Notebooks will occasionally be taken up and in-class assignments/work graded.

VI. CHORUS FEES
The only fee this year is for t-shirts. The cost for the chorus t-shirt is $15. If anyone has a concern regarding purchasing or fees please contact me.
T-shirt money is due Wednesday, October 4. Check or cash will be accepted. (Make check payable to Gravelly Hill Middle School Chorus.)
