Daisy Arts has been working in the Gaunless Gateway area for over 20 years, positively promoting the use of the arts as a tool for change in areas of social deprivation, and its importance as a practice for supporting better mental health and well-being within a community setting.
The collective of self-employed artists that work under the umbrella of the organisation have been fully committed to their local area, and Gaunless Gateway have been able to support some of that work over the years.
They engage with people of all ages and abilities in a variety of ways, such as through on-going weekly youth theatre sessions, adult art workshops and school and community centre based work.
They have built a reputation of working collaboratively; premiering a River Gaunless Symphony with secondary students, and publishing an in-depth schools pack for use within Primary Schools, as part of their work with the Wear Rivers Trust.
Promenade theatre productions, staged on a local level, to performing in parades such as Liverpool’s Brazilica has seen our young people being offered exciting opportunities to be part of projects that take them beyond their environment; a positive impact in the growth and outlook of our young people.
As working artists they continued their practice throughout COVID, developing hand-made doorstep gift-bags, that we initially helped fund, that were then bought-in by other organisations to offer to their communities. Their three-week summer school in 2020 was a huge success in supporting youngsters come together after the lengthy first lockdown.
Looking to better their structure, the team at Gaunless Gateway Big Local have helped signpost Daisy Arts to business support networks to provide expert advice in strengthening their business moving forward, a business that will be focussed on local issues, which will continue to work alongside others for the benefit of all.
In this episode, Tarek Mrad from Heston West Big Local interviews Jane Crawford, Managing Director and Founder of Daisy Arts. Daisy Arts, based in Bishop Auckland, is a long established and highly regarded community arts organisation who believe participation in the arts transforms communities and individuals.
