I'm grateful for these summer conferences in part because it provides an opportunity to relive my freshman year of college, eating in the same dining hall and attending presentations in the same auditorium although both buildings have had considerable alterations since the 1968-69 school year.
As glad as I was to leave the college behind me in 1969 I have many great memories of the year I spent there and it seems like each time back some forgotten memory pops into my mind. For example, during a break one morning I went outside and walked across Lincoln Ave. to a group of wooden chairs on the lawn between the gym and the dining hall. Sitting there by myself I recalled how in 1968-69 there were a couple of old two story houses in the same area. These served as girls' dormitories. One night there was an open house and I visited some girls who lived in one of these houses. On the wall of their room was this picture of Joe Namath fresh from the 1969 Super Bowl. I could not imagine a single girl at either of my two high schools doing something that cool.
At the June 2023 Civil War Institute I was asked several times how many years I had attended so when I returned home I pulled out the material from past programs and compiled this list. I had guessed the 2023 conference to have been my ninth, but it was only my eighth.
