As a very crude first approximation, imagine taking an existing textbook, finding each heading in the text, turning the heading into a prompt, and then deleting all the text beneath the heading. Then do the same with every colorful little box containing an example, case study, etc.

As an initial first step in this direction, generative textbooks could be created as supplemental companions to existing static textbooks. However, I predict many students will quickly abandon the traditional format textbook in favor of the more interactive, open-ended, and personalized nature of the generative textbook.

And for those of you who expect every post on this blog to be related to OER in some way (you did notice I changed the name of the blog, right?), yes, you could openly license your generative textbook (collection of prompts). But the fundamental role of OER changes dramatically in future scenarios where the majority of the learning material a student engages with is generated on the fly by an LLM, and was never eligible for copyright protection in the first place.

According to the terms of your rental agreement, textbooks not returned by the due date will be charged the difference between the purchase price and rental price of the book(s), plus a late fee of $30.

First Day Inclusive Access (FDIA) is an alternative to traditional textbooks. FDIA provides students access to digital course textbooks and materials on the first day of class, at a lower cost than a physical copy of the textbook. See below for courses using First Day Inclusive Access.

The idea is the same with students having access to their course materials on the first day of class. First Day Inclusive Access is exclusive to BNC and this makes a smoother transaction for the student. With other inclusive access programs, students go directly through the publisher to access the materials, and their access may be extended beyond one semester.

If the student withdraws from the class prior to enrollment verification, or if they are dropped from the class as a result of the enrollment verification process, they will not be charged for the FDIA access. Students are dropped for enrollment verification, and then the next business day is when BNC pulls the data for billing purposes.

An alarming percentage of students choose to forego obtaining course materials, putting their academic success at risk. One of the main reasons is the high price of textbooks. The cost of traditional, physical textbooks have skyrocketed. Used textbooks and rentals are also increasing in price and decreasing in availability, as sales of new textbooks decline. These factors make it more difficult for students to obtain and afford the required materials.

OER are Open Educational Resources that replace a traditional textbook at no cost to students. Your professor will provide a link to these resources in the course syllabus or the D2L course shell. Please see the list of sections that use OER below.

Students should access the online bookstore for their textbook information. Textbook costs are listed where applicable. For sections using First Day Inclusive Access, the cost will be published as soon as it is available in the "Courses Using First Day Inclusive Access" list above.

From there, they can discover the buy back price, print out a pre-paid shipping label (offsets the amount of buyback received) to send back books for either buyback or rental.

Some financial aid students are eligible to receive money for the purchase of books as an advance of their financial aid award. Each semester, eligible students may have access to a Financial Aid Book Voucher, of up to $600, as an advance, from LCC, of their financial aid. The Financial Aid Book Voucher enables the student to purchase books from Barnes & Noble College. The actual amount of the Financial Aid Book Voucher utilized will be charged to the student's account. If a student loses eligibility for financial aid after the charges have been applied to the student account, the student is responsible for paying those charges.

There is no obligation to purchase your textbooks from Barnes & Noble College. Students can purchase their books wherever they wish. However, students who wish to take advantage of the convenience of a Financial Aid Book Voucher to purchase their books can only do so through the Barnes & Noble College online bookstore. The student may use their Financial Aid Book Voucher for the following book options, if the option is available for the requested text:

Instructional Resources Service (IRS) office is where you check out your textbooks. IRS provides print and digital textbooks, access codes, CDs, DVDs, and many other resources used for instruction in your courses.

All of your instructional resources provided through IRS are funded with undergraduate and graduate rental fees, and money from the sale of used or withdrawn resources. UW-Stout students pay a rental feel included in their tuition based upon the number of credits taken.

The HEOA requires sufficient information to allow students to acquire instructional resources from alternative sources. In order to comply with this federal requirement, new instructor textbook requests must be submitted before the following dates:

IRS does not sell textbooks that are currently in use. To purchase a textbook, most are available on Amazon. Resources that have been withdrawn are often available for students to pick up for free. The free textbook are located on a shelf just down the hall from IRS.

The Instructional Resources Service office has always been a part of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, opening for the first time in 1891. It was the mission of the office to provide rented instructional materials to the students at relatively low cost. Now, over 120 years later, the mission of the office remains very much the same. We are always looking for the most efficient and cost effective ways to provide the materials UW-Stout students need to optimize their education. 152ee80cbc
