With the Deutsches Sprachdiplom II (DSD II), the Deutsche Sprachschule Washington offers an examination that prepares students to study at universities in Germany. More students here than at any other German educational institution in the United States take and pass this examination. A broad portfolio of German and American German language examinations, as well as a wide variety of extracurricular activities round out the offerings of the Deutsche Sprachschule Washington. The Central Agency for German Schools Abroad assists the Deutsche Sprachschule Washington in securing and enhancing quality standards.

Our small, interactive, project-oriented courses encourage students to develop their analytical and critical thinking skills, their transcultural competence, and their interpersonal and communicative skills. Working with authentic materials from German-speaking countries students gain linguistic competence and deepen awareness of their own and other cultures. Interdisciplinary approaches allow students to engage in intellectually challenging group and individual projects and to achieve high levels of language competence as articulated in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF). The adaptation of this Framework to German Studies curriculum equips our students to succeed as global citizens.

The Cornell University German Studies Undergraduate Program is unique in adapting the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF) to reflect the needs and qualities of Cornell students. Accordingly, curriculum development integrates research in second language acquisition and cognitive learning theories into a well-articulated sequence of language study. This allows for setting clear standards to be attained at each level of instruction while accommodating varying learner styles and encouraging student autonomy. Our re-conceptualized program enables students to attain high levels of language competence and equips them to become successful participants in a transnational community.

An introduction to approaches, concepts, and analytical tools for study in the field, complemented by advanced practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Credit cannot be earned for this course and GER 2109.

Introductory course preparing students to function in business-related communicative situations, with an emphasis on language skills necessary for work in areas such as marketing and finance. Prerequisites: GER 2010or permission of the instructor.

Consideration of what it meant to grow up and live in the German Democratic Republic and the changes and challenges to East German identity since unification. The course draws upon historical, political, and sociological studies as well as literary and filmic representations of East German experience.

Theories and perspectives on second language learning and the teaching methods that stem from them. Taken in conjunction with a peer mentoring program in which advanced-level language students serve as learning assistants in introductory courses. Restricted to language learning assistants with the permission of the instructor.

AP German Language and Culture is equivalent to an intermediate level college course in German. Students cultivate their understanding of German language and culture by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations as they explore concepts related to family and communities, personal and public identities, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges.

To provide context and content for students to develop their skills in the modes of communication, AP German Language and Culture takes a thematic approach. This framework provides a clear and detailed description of the course requirements necessary for student success. The framework specifies what students must know, be able to do, and understand to qualify for college credit or placement. There are also many suggested authentic resources to support instruction throughout.

The AP Program is unique in its reliance on Development Committees. These committees, made up of an equal number of college faculty and experienced secondary AP teachers from across the country, are essential to the preparation of AP course curricula and exams.

We help students acquire German language skills, regardless of their level of entry. Our students learn how to understand, read, speak, write, and indeed how to think in German. We are committed to the idea that language acquisition is not merely a skill, but is deeply connected to how we experience and understand other cultures and societies. Learning another language, in turn, changes how we perceive our own.

Broadly put, this is our program goal with respect to our language-teaching: for students to understand and experience how inhabiting a foreign language can open up new realms of thought and meaning, in both academic and personal contexts.

I was informed yesterday that the German language course I will be taking will be taught in German and not English, and I taught it didn't make sense since it's a course designed to teach German.. so how am I supposed to have to already know what the teacher is saying in German?

The goal of this sequence is to develop proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for use in everyday communication. Knowledge and awareness of the different cultures of the German speaking countries is also a goal. Please note that if you have any prior knowledge of German, you cannot enroll in GRMN 10100. You are encouraged to enroll in GRMN 10201 instead, and/or to take the language placement exam to determine the most appropriate course.

This intensive, three-quarter sequence brings students to high-intermediate levels in all four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening so that students can enter third-year level courses in German. Learners who are starting German late in their College careers or who wish to move forward swiftly will gain skills corresponding to two full years of study. NOTE: Each course is 200 units and corresponds in workload to taking two courses.
