Welcome!
I am George. As of October 2022, I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Technical University of Denmark. My research is about Multi-agent systems, Sequential Decision Making under Uncertainty, and their applications to power and energy systems. I am interested in bridging the gaps among Optimization, Game Theory, and Artificial Intelligence towards providing solutions to the new challenges of renewables-and-flexibility based energy systems.
Until September 2022, I was a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Technical University of Athens and, between 2020 and 2022, I was with the Eindhoven University of Technology under a Marie-Curie fellowship. Previously, I obtained my PhD from National Technical University of Athens and also worked with the Greek Transmission System Operator.
News
My new monograph "A New Notion of Reserve for Power Systems With High Penetration of Storage and Flexible Demand" in IEEE Trans. on Energy Markets, Policy, and Regulation, proposes a very practical, yet theoretically sound, idea on how to enable storage systems to undertake more of the power system's reserve requirements, potentially achieving substantial savings in costs and emissions. The paper can be accessed here.
Accepted: My monograph "Correlated Equilibrium Power Flow in Distribution Networks using Graphical Game Theory" is accepted in IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. The paper can be accessed here.
Accepted: Our paper "Co-optimization of Distributed Renewable Energy and Storage Investment Decisions in a TSO-DSO Coordination Framework" is accepted in IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. A great work lead by Dr. Konstantinos Steriotis.
Accepted: Our paper "Coordination of Neighboring Active Distribution Networks under Electricity Price Uncertainty Using Distributed Robust Bi-Level Programming", is accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. A great collaboration with Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.
New Position: In October 2022 I will be joining DTU Compute as an Assistant Professor of "Stochastic Adaptive Control in Energy Systems".
Funded: My proposal "ARES" is approved for funding by the Hellenic (Greek) Foundation of Research and Innovation.
Accepted: Our paper "Multistage Energy Management of Coordinated Smart Buildings: A Multiagent Markov Decision Process Approach" is accepted in IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. The paper can be accessed here.
For the Spring semester of 2022, I will be course responsible (course designer and sole lecturer) in “Automatic Control of Dynamical Systems”, at the University of West Attica.
Accepted: Our paper Georgios Tsaousoglou, Ippokratis Sartzetakis, Prodromos Makris, Nikolaos Efthymiopoulos, Emmanouel Varvarigos, Nikolaos G. Paterakis, "Flexibility Aggregation of Temporally Coupled Resources in Real Time Balancing Markets Using Machine Learning" is accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics.
Accepted: Our Open Access paper Georgios Tsaousoglou, Juan S. Giraldo, Nikolaos G. Paterakis "Market Mechanisms for Local Electricity Markets: A Review of Models, Solution Concepts and Algorithmic Techniques" is accepted for publication in Elsevier Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews.
Three masters students I have (co-)supervised have presented their thesis during the last months. Namely:
a) Pau Brossa Rodriguez "Non-Firm Transport Capacity Allocation Mechanism for LV Network", TUe,
b) Antonios Valmas, "Optimizing Vehicle-to-Grid services using Deep Reinforcement Learning", NTUA,
c) Panagiotis Loulakis, "Profitable Vehicle-to-Grid Services with Minimal Battery Degradation using Deep Reinforcement Learning", NTUA.Two papers presented in SEST 2021. The first is about building a price menu for an Electric Vehicle arriving at a charging station, so that the driver can intuitively pick a desirable, yet efficient, option. The second is about fair congestion management in power distribution systems.
Our new paper, with colleagues from NTUA, presents a method for allocating the computational resources necessary for the execution of flexibility-market clearing, AC-OPF algorithms. The paper is now published in IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing.
Funded: I am granted a Marie-Curie fellowship for a second time. This time, it is in collaboration with Denmark Technical University and Prof. Mattia Marinelli, about smart load management under uncertainty, with efficiency and feasibility guarantees.
Accepted: Our paper G. Tsaousoglou, K. Mitropoulou, K. Steriotis, N. Paterakis, P. Pinson, E. Varvarigos, "Managing Distributed Flexibility under Uncertainty by Combining Deep Learning with Duality", is accepted in IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. A pre-print version can be accessed here.
On June 17th, I am giving two lectures on market mechanisms and algorithmic aspects of electricity systems, within the TUe course "Power systems and electricity markets".
Accepted: Our paper G. Tsaousoglou, K. Petsinis, P. Makris, I. Skoteinos, N. Efthymiopoulos, E. Varvarigos "A shortage pricing mechanism for capacity remuneration with simulation for the Greek electricity balancing market" is accepted in Elsevier Utilities Policy, and can be found online here.
