My primary research interest is the structure and evolution of animal genomes, focusing mainly on non-model organisms (including nematodes, tardigrades, molluscs, fungi, and bacteria). I use bioinformatics tools to analyse genome sequence data generated by NGS technologies. In particular, I am interested in the origins of gene novelty, horizontal gene transfer, the deep phylogeny of animals, comparative and evolutionary genomics, genomic architecture and plasticity in species with asexual reproduction, and the emergence and evolution of parasitism in nematodes
