Lower Coastal Plain
The Lower Coastal Plain is near sea-level. It is close to the coast. The soil here is sandy or full of lots of clay. It is not good for growing crops.
Habitat
The Lower Coastal Plain has two types of habitats, wetlands and coniferous forests.
A wetland is a piece of land covered by water. In the Lower Coastal Plain there are two types of wetlands: swamps and marshes.
- Swamps have a lot of trees and equal amounts of dry land and water.
- Marshes are found where the water and land meet. They have mostly grassy plants rather than trees.
A coniferous forest is a type of forest that has trees with needles. These trees do not lose their leaves in the fall. A pine tree is an example. The name coniferous comes from the word "cone", like a pine cone.
Climate
The climate of the Lower Coastal Plain is hot and humid. Scientists call this type of climate "humid subtropical." It's pretty hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. It rains some and the air feels wet and sticky, or humid, most of the time.
