The Georgia Brass Band was created in the spring of 1999 by co-founders Joe Johnson and Christopher Priest, presenting its first concert that September. The Georgia Brass Band is modeled after the British-style brass band. These bands gained prominence in Victorian England during the early 19th century industrial revolution and were traditionally sponsored by factories, coal mines, or other industrial organizations. Today brass bands like the GBB carry on this tradition world-wide!
Since 1999, the nonprofit Georgia Brass Band has entertained audiences, both locally and nationally, with breathtaking performances that demonstrate the versatility and skill of some of the most accomplished performers in the United States. The band has competed successfully in several international competitions, and recorded two critically acclaimed albums. Georgia Brass Band members are selected by audition and include some of the finest musicians in the Atlanta area. All musicians and staff volunteer their time and talents to the GBB!
The Georgia Brass Band performs a diverse repertoire of original British brass band works, marches, sacred arrangements, classical transcriptions, filmscores, pop, jazz, and newly commissioned compositions. Concerts feature world-renowned guest soloists from major symphony orchestras, universities, and premiere military and brass bands.
In addition to the Georgia Brass Band Concert Series, the GBB joins forces with bands worldwide for the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) Championships. Each year NABBA hosts a competitive event dedicated to the promotion, growth, and development of the British-style brass bands throughout the United States and Canada. This competitive event provides an opportunity for musical camaraderie, networking, and a true appreciation for the best of brass banding!
