There are several ways to find the geolocation of a user: HTML5 API, Cell Signal, and IP Address to name a few. The pairing of an IP address to a geographical location is the method we used to provide geolocation data. There are times when you need to identify where your web visitors are coming from. You might have an ecommerce website, and would like to know where your potential customers are, pre-populate country codes on forms, display different languages and reduce credit card fraud based on geographic location. Or, you might want to fight against illegal spammers and hackers and would like to locate the sources of a problem.

There are several commercially available geolocation databases, and their pricing and accuracy may vary. Ip2location, MaxMind, Tamo Soft, DB-IP, Ipinfo, and IPligence offer fee-based databases that can be easily integrated into a web application. Most geolocation database vendors offer APIs and example codes (in ASP, PHP, .NET, and Java programming languages) that can be used to retrieve geolocation data from the database. We use several commercial databases to offer free geolocation data on our website.

There are also freely available geolocation databases. Vendors offering commercial geolocation databases also offer a Lite or Community edition that provides IP-to-Country mappings. Ip2Country.net and Webhosting.info (Directi) offer free IP-to-Country databases that can be also integrated into your web application. There are companies also offering free web services that can be used to show the geolocation of an IP address on your website.

The accuracy of the geolocation database varies depending on which database you use. For IP-to-country databases, some vendors claim to offer 98% to 99% accuracy although typical Ip2Country database accuracy is more like 95%. For IP-to-Region (or City), accuracy range anywhere from 50% to 75% if neighboring cities are treated as correct. Considering that there is no official source of IP-to-Region information, 50+% accuracy is pretty good.

Geolocation refers to the identification of the geographic location of a user or computing device via a variety of data collection mechanisms. Typically, most geolocation services use network routing addresses or internal GPS devices to determine this location. Geolocation is a device-specific API. This means that browsers or devices must support geolocation in order to use it through web applications.

Applications that want to perform geolocation must support the W3C Geolocation standard. Notice that the sample code above determines the user's location through the W3C navigator.geolocation property.

Some browsers use IP addresses to detect a user's location. However, it may only provide a rough estimate of a user's location. The W3C approach is the easiest and most fully-supported so it should be prioritized over other geolocation methods.

Specific instances include: animal geotracking, the process of inferring the location of animals over time; positioning system, the mechanisms for the determination of geographic positions in general; internet geolocation, geolocating a device connected to the internet; and mobile phone tracking.[2]

WhatsApp provides a free user location tool which can be used to spy on other users.[9] Food delivery apps use this.[10] During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian army called airstrikes on locations from videos that have geolocation data. Geopositioning is also used in the collection of meteorological and phytopathological data to forecast crop pathogens.[11]

This is strange. Matomo with geolocation gives me IP: 141.101.0.0 when I visit my website either with mobile phone or with computer browser. Website is on-premises with Finnish server provider Wepardi 

My laptop is in ethernet connection to wired cable modem with telecom operator. My mobile phone in in WiFi connection to the same cable modem.

When I check MyIP directly with browser I get it right. But Matomo gives me IP: 141.101.0.0 which is probably Mykolaiv, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, but Matomo says it is Netherlands!

What is this?

I know this is an old thread, but I am having the same problem. I had to create a button that enabled and disabled the session.props.geolocation.enabled property in order to be able to get my GPS coordinates to update regularly. I set the GPS accuracy to the highest setting. The accelerometer data updates regularly, but not the GPS data. I tried this on several different phones. Is re-enableing the geolocation the only way to have the GPS location refresh?

DB-IP updates their free databases once a month, and their commercial databases every day. Matomo can be set to auto update the geo databases every week or every month. The geolocation databases automatic updates are executed by the Matomo Archiving script.

So i used to work with the geolocation map thru Civil 3D by assigning a coordinate system.

Was not a hassle usually, i've installed Civil 3D 2016 today because of some partners that we work with asked us to work under that version.


Since then i've encountered problems. Installed again the hot fix after the C3D 2016 install. 

Doesnt improve nothing.

The issue I'm running into is how to connect the geolocation for pre-established survey locations with all of the rest of the data. I don't want to use the "geolocate" function in survey123 because I want the data to always be tied to an exact lat/long. The geolocation fields are calculated for each 1 km MODIS Instantaneous Field of Views (IFOV) for all orbits daily. The locations and ancillary information corresponds to the intersection of the centers of each IFOV from 10 detectors in an ideal 1 km band on the Earth's surface. A digital terrain model is used to model the Earth's surface. The main inputs are the spacecraft attitude and orbit, the instrument telemetry and the digital elevation model. The geolocation fields include geodetic Latitude, Longitude, surface height above geoid, solar zenith and azimuth angles, satellite zenith and azimuth angles, and a land/sea mask for each 1 km sample. Additional information is included in the header to enable the calculation of the approximate location of the center of the detectors of any of the 36 MODIS bands. This product is used as input by a large number of subsequent MODIS products, particularly the products produced by the Land team.

As far as I understood @KurtWerstein, he ist mostly interested in using DEVONthink To Go. While it adds geolocation information to created documents, it does not come with an EXIF editor included. The EXIF data should used when importing images but I just discovered an issue here which we will address in one of the next maintenance releases.

The issue is that when you import an image from, e.g., Photos via Clip to DEVONthink or drag-and-drop, the geolocation is not read from the EXIF data and transferred to the document metadata. The EXIF information itself stays in the image, of course.

I am using navigator.geolocation to get the latitude and longitude of the user. I am then using latitude and longitude as query params to fetch the WeatherAPI so that my website will show the user the weather in his exact town.

The problem is, I can see from the console log that the fetch() function (which I have stored inside useEffect() runs before the navigator.geolocation functions gets the coordinates, resulting in the API fetching me a location with coordinates 0, 0. e24fc04721
