Thrown into the challenges of remote teaching, we looked to each other for support and ideas. That, of course, included our colleagues from our own school. But, thanks to the technology and an attitude of openness, that also included colleagues from other schools; people who we have only met through Zoom calls and DMs, but people who have become our collaborators, our friends, our tribe.
It's in that context that we launch GeoHub NI, a forum for sharing, supporting and learning together. This Hub emerges from Northern Ireland, and will seek to pull together teachers from here in the first instance. But, we learned through the pandemic that, thanks to technology, we are not longer 'prisoners of geography'. And so this Hub will be an outward looking one, one that connects teachers across the island of Ireland, across the water to England, Scotland and Wales, and anywhere round the world where we find geography teachers who are interested in coming together to learn.
We have lots of ideas about the form the Hub could take. We are starting with a Teach Meet with our friends from the East London Geography Hub. We could have remote sessions on a variety of topics of interest: from geography CPD, bringing in outside experts to help develop our subject knowledge; to practical sessions sharing ideas on 'How I teach...' various aspects of the course. We could also run revision sessions for our pupils, especially as we do our best to support Y12 pupils whose education was so disrupted last year.
But those are only the start of the ideas. The future of where GeoHub NI goes is one that is open and expansive.
And, if you like what you hear and are keen to be involved, we are looking for geography teachers from Northern Ireland to help us plan for the future direction of this Hub, a kind of steering group, so to speak. If you'd like to be part of this exciting movement, just let us know in the link above.
