2. Expression of Interest: Your Expression of Interest should respond to the following prompts in a format you prefer. This could be a video (~ 1-2 minutes), a short written statement (~300-400 words), photo essay, art piece, or other format. Regardless of format, please make sure that all submitted materials for your application are clear and easy to understand as a listener/viewer/reader.

3. Please submit a reference letter from an elder, teacher, guidance counsellor, or a non-relative family friend.

What is the application review and selection process?

After May 16th, a team of KBIC (NRD, THPO) and MTU staff will review all applications. The reviewers will be looking for Expressions of Interest that address all four prompts with an aim of selecting a group of participants with diverse experiences, perspectives, skills, and gifts (which take many forms). After you have completed your application you can expect to hear from us by June 8th regarding your application. We will contact everyone via email with final decisions.

What is included?

You will receive a stipend of $1,000 for participating in both weeks (10 days) of the Geoheritage Summer Internship and completing a Story Map (stipend will be provided upon participation in the two weeks and completion of the StoryMap). Lunches for all ten days of the internship and field transportation (July 11-15) from a common meeting point are also included.

Who is participating?

Ten students from the Keweenaw Bay and Keweenaw Peninsula region aged 15-18 will participate in the Geoheritage Summer Internship. You will be a part of an interdisciplinary, multicultural, and multi-aged team of Great Lakes knowledge holders, experts in Anishinaabemowin (Anishinaabe language), and geoscientists and geospatial scientists.

When is the Geoheritage Summer Internship and how long will I be involved each day?

The first week of the internship is July 11-15th, we will start our day around 9:00 AM and end by 4:00 PM. The second week is July 25-29th held at the Great Lakes Research Center at Michigan Tech; the day will start at 10:00 AM ending at 4:00 PM.

Are there any expectations of me BEFORE the Geoheritage Summer Internship?

Yes! We will organize a meet-and-greet with you and your family a few weeks before the internship experience to provide an overview of what to expect and will hand out information packets for you to plan for your time in the field and geospatial lab.

Are there any expectations of me AFTER the Geoheritage Summer Internship?

Yes! As a final component of the Geoheritage Internship Experience you will present the StoryMaps you create as part of the Geospatial Workshop. You may choose to present your work in your school or at other community events. You will also be asked to complete a survey and short interview about your internship experience.

There will be opportunity for students to present at a conference in Spring of 2023 (potential conferences include the Lake Superior Youth Symposium, Geoscience Alliance Conference, Michigan Place-based Education Conference, or the Michigan Alliance for Outdoor and Environmental Education).

What about Covid-19?

All COVID-19 safety precautions will be adhered to according to local public health guidelines.

Who is leading these efforts and how is it funded?

This internship is facilitated as a partnership between the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community's Natural Resources Department and the Tribal Historic Preservation Office, and Michigan Tech's Great Lakes Research Center and Geospatial Research Facility. Funding is provided by the National Science Foundation (Award Number: 2136139).
