You can use Google Hangouts for chat and video conferencing (similar to whatsapp but through your google account so no other personal info (e.g phone number) needs to be shared. It is useful for whole group and sub group project work.

Google Meet is the simple URL version of Google Hangouts for meetings (exactly the same as Zoom). It can be used for intra and inter group meets.
