A Math Exploration of Wonder!
Watch the video
What do you notice? What do you wonder?
-Write down an estimate for the number of pencils you think are in the container. --What would be too low an estimate? What would be too high an estimate?
-What information would you need to know the exact number of pencils?
More information!
After watching the video, you should have enough information to know the exact number of pencils.
Watch Act 3 to check your answer!
Were you able to find the exact number?
How close was your first estimate?
Explanation of Activity:
This is a 3-Act-Task based on a math series by Dan Meyer, Kyle Pearce, Graham Fletcher and others. Normally this kind of activity would be done in class under the supervision of a teacher, who would take the students step-by-step through the process. This is an affordance that is similar to telling stories, but could also be categorized as a demonstration (Woolfit, 2015). Instead of simply watching the video straight through to the end, it is broken into three parts. The first part captures the students' interest and encourages curiosity. The second video gives additional information which allows the student to solve the problem. The final video makes it more obvious what the answer is. There is no exact answer reveal, so the students are left relying on their problem solving skills. This is a very engaging activity, and could be considered "generative", as the students will actively participating throughout the video segments, and in-between (Mayer, 2020).
I created this video at my school, and edited it using Cyberlink Powerdirector. I added a music track from Chosic.com onto each video.
