If you aspire to play at the varsity or collegiate level, you need to be relentless in working at improving your first touch over the summer. Most players in our program play club and think that is enough. However, if you want to improve as an individual, you need to put time in outside of your club and high school practices to improve your footwork. If you spend just 15-20 minutes a day during the summer you will see drastic improvement. You can't get upset about what team you make next season if you don't put the time in this summer to improve. If you didn't make varsity last year, you won't make it this year simply because you are one year older. Age doesn't matter - skill level does! If you work on your foot skills this summer, it will show during tryouts and next season. And, if you don’t participate, it will show as well. Working on your foot skills is the best way to increase your foot speed. Summer is the only time during the year when you have free time. Be disciplined! Be dedicated! Get to work and invest in yourself! : )
*If you have strong footskills, start with the Advanced Level drills. If your footskills are average, start with the Regular Level drills.
If you have a sibling or friend to help you work on your soccer skills, here are some other drills you can work on aside from those listed below.
Heading Series (did at camp)
Pele Series (did at camp)
1 on 1 Moves (X moves gauntlet - did at camp)
1 on 1 to Goal
Any type of moving touches - don't do standing touches
2 touch, 1 touch, volleys: inside of foot, laces, double touch, thigh foot, chest foot, head foot)
Coervers through cones (did at camp) - can do individually
The possibilites are endless
If you wanted to make the basketball team, but had never played basketball before, how would you prepare? Would you focus on running? Ab work? Shooting around a few times with your friends? Hopefully not, because none of those things would help you. Since basketball requires eye-hand coordination, you would need to practice your dribbling and shooting skills over and over and over again hundreds of times. In soccer, we don't use our hands. We use our feet. THIS IS WHY YOU MUST FOCUS ON YOUR FOOT SKILLS TO IMPROVE! Stop choosing the "easy" route and going for a run, bike ride, doing ab work or taking a few shots on goal with a friend - that's not the best use of your time and won't help you gain the most improvement. It won't help you make varsity and it won't help you play in college. You need to invest in yourself and work on your foot skills daily. As little as 20 minutes each day could help you improve by leaps and bounds! Put in the hard work, or someone else will.
