Privacy
One’s right to privacy is evermore crucial, especially when it comes to the disclosure of genetic information. We as a team hold this value of privacy close to us, and acknowledge that individuals should be able to keep their genetic information as private as possible. This value is a historical value of the United States Constitution and must be held into account concerning genetic information. This form of an individual’s privacy must be protected and handled with the same care as any other form of privacy related to an individual within the constitutional United States.
Transparency
Transparency encompasses honesty, accountability, and integrity. When it comes to genetic privacy, individual citizens deserve transparency from any group that could access their genetic information. This could include genetic and biotechnology companies like 23andMe. In other words, citizens deserve to know the full extent of possibilities when they choose to offer their genetic information. Prioritizing transparency means that individuals are made aware of any and everything that they are giving up when they offer their DNA sequences. For example, they must be made aware that their genes could be used to convict them of a crime, target ads toward them, and in some cases, change their insurance policies.
Justice
Justice is a term that bases itself on the perspective that individuals should always receive what they rightfully deserve. In connection to an individual's private genetic information, it is a just notion to respect one's decisions regarding who receives this information, and what is done with it accordingly. As a team, and as any other organizational structure, justice is an aspect that must be considered, as it is a foundational concept in United States law and regulation of civil rights for all individuals. This being said, justice must be upheld when dealing with sharing an individual's genetic information.
