Introducing the Devon Book Club
December 2020
Devon Book Club began as a small idea. I hoped to find maybe 50 book lovers who I could chat with online about books. That was 6 years ago.
We now have over 4500 members across Twitter, Goodreads and Facebook. I welcome everyone personally. Each new member of our community is a new story.
Books are a wonderful leveller. They offer a shared point of interest, through which people can offer their insights, or just enjoy the conversations if they prefer to participate quietly.
Whilst largely online (be a struggle to fit us in one room these days!), we do meet - in bookshops, libraries, parks, on our beautiful coastpath. Anywhere that works. Always free so that everyone can join in. We give books away, generously donated by writers who are part of our community.
We celebrate anything that is happening in our book world, supporting festivals and local publishers as well as booksellers and libraries and am now exploring the potential to connect with artists and musicians.
Our community is built on mutual trust and respect. We share ideas and recommendations, agreeing and disagreeing with kindness. We’ve enjoyed themed discussions and talk about anything that is happening in the book world.
I’ve been humbled by the way people share their personal experiences – people who care for others, asylum seekers and refugees, those experiencing or working with loneliness, anxiety or mental ill health, people who are frail or those with disabilities, the LGBTQ community and people from other cultures and countries.
We have found our way to each other by word of mouth and, I hope, feel safer, more connected and stronger knowing that there is always someone with whom to share our thoughts, delights and fears. Perhaps at this time, when so many are feeling unhappy, scared and lonely, this is more important than ever.
We don’t set out to address thos
e issues. It is just part of what happens when lovely people come together with a shared interest.
Above all, we are people who love books. The rest follows because every one of our members is extraordinary in one way or another and recognise that in others.
Oh, and for the avoidance of doubt, the jam always goes on top of the cream!
