As previously stated, fundamental gender differences do not exist. Yet, gender discrimination is still a problem for both women and men. While there are no actual gender differences, the belief that those differences exist causes gender inequality. This belief of fixed gender traits that different shade men from women is caused by social norms. Social norms is an important factor of gender inequality that restricts women and men from being more than just their gender.
Social norms is caused by society's expectations of individuals and is the reason for a clear segregation between women and men. An experiment was conducted by Hyde where participants were told they were not to be identified as male or female. In contrast to society's popular belief that women are 'delicate' and men are 'aggressive,' the experiment showed that women were more assertive while men were more passive. Society's expectations of men and women accord with their gender. However, once those expectations were gone, no participants followed the social norms that came with their gender. This shows that throwing social norms out the window meant gender stereotypes were no longer applicable to participants; men and women alike.
Therefore, women and men have been led to believe the misconception that females and males are fundamentally different and the roles they are given in society cannot be changed due to their fixed sex-based traits
Earlier on, Peterson argues the gender pay gap exist due to women taking up the caregiver role in a family, causing women to spend less time on their work compared to men. While all parents enjoy spending time with their kids, it is impossible to say that all women want to be in charge of domestic work; letting their husbands be the breadwinner in the family. Women are expected to take care of domestic work due to the social norm that women should be the caregiver while men should focus on their jobs. This pressurizes women to make time for domestic work instead of splitting that work evenly with their male partner.
Overall, there is no fundamental difference between men and women that can stop women and men from being more than just their gender.

However, the belief of gender differences varies across countries and different environments. Countries such as the previously mentioned Norway and Sweden, have little to no gender prejudice. In addition, research shows that growing national wealth ties to gender equality and causes bigger differences in preference between men and women rather than to stronger similarities.
This research included 76 countries and 80,000 people, highlighting that national wealth affects the choices men and women make, ultimately impacting gender inequality. The results hold that abundance and national wealth give men and women more freedom to express gender-related preferences; unconstrained by hardships that might force them to do otherwise.
Hence, both national wealth and social norms influence the extent of gender inequality
Overall, there are no fundamental differences between men and women that can stop women and men from being more than just their gender. Therefore, it is the belief of such fixed gender differences that reinforce society’s expectations of women and men, causing social norms and gender prejudice.
To end, or at least decrease the rates of gender inequality, men and women must realise their respective equal roles and strive to complement each other in their shared struggle to improve life and learn to appreciate and respect your male or female counterpart.
