My name is Katie, I'm a white, cisgender woman from the UK, and I made an Instagram post about gender identities around the world which accidentally went viral. The account I posted from is a small Instagram account (which is my small business embroidery account), and therefore I decided that it would be best to create a place where all the resources which had been suggested by others and mentioned by me could easily be found and accessed.
This site only came about through some wonderful people on Instagram taking the time to raise issues with the original post and creating space for constructive conversations about next, meaningful steps. I want to say especial thanks to Jenn (@octobus_ adventures) and Mona (@xoemoh) for calling me out and helping to create something positive and changing my attitude to social justice work. Also thank you to Thom (@thoma_rama), Julius (@av_buhawi) and Gisele (@elesig.ekalb) - to name but a few - who shared their insight and education in the comments on the original post and in my DMs.
This site is by no means finished, and I hope to continue to add resources to learn from and links to donate. My intention is to centre the voices of people from the specific communities themselves, therefore I have tried to ensure the videos and articles either include interviews or are written/filmed by the communities. I have also reached out to several people from gender-diverse communities around the world and asked them to share their stories if they are comfortable. I have offered payment for these and I do not expect everyone to respond. As I only speak English fluently, this will impact the number of people I am able to communicate with and the resources I share, though I am happy to accept and discuss ideas on how to change that.
I hope that you find these resources useful and can learn more on these topics from people in these communities. Please note that several of these resources discuss sexual abuse, transphobia, homophobia and verbal/physical attacks.
