15 mins Welcome and Introduction
Initial introductions and workshop overview, objectives and key question: how do we design generative AI tools for good friction?
20 mins Opening Provocations
Short provocations from the organisers to frame discussion around the changing role of humans in AI-supported work. These may include questions such as: Do we need teachers anymore? What happens when no one gets to practice being bad at something? What role is left for the human when AI produces the ideas?
20 mins Group Introductions and Context Sharing
Participants introduce themselves in small groups and share examples of how generative AI is being used in their discipline or professional context.
15 mins Group Themes
Small groups share key observations with the larger group. The organisers will facilitate discussion around emerging themes.
45 mins Group Activity: Mapping Cognitive Breakdown
Identifying what tasks can be supported based on context what kind of thinking is being offloaded, where users should be questioning outputs, and what forms of judgement become less visible.
15 mins Report back
Groups share their maps with the larger group. Organisers to identify recurring AI reliance patterns and points of contrast across different domains.
15 mins Break
40 mins Group Activity: Designing for Good Friction
Groups develop possible design responses based on identified breakdown points. Groups will consider what kinds of friction could support reflection, evaluation or responsibility without making the tool feel punitive or unusable.
15 mins Report back
Groups share their design principles with all participants.
30 mins Wrap Up and Conclusion
Summary by organisers. Whole group discussion of workshop outcomes and future collaboration.
