My natural hair journey began 7 years ago when I decided to do a big chop. My hair was relaxed at the time, but I wanted it to be fuller and puffier.
I’ve always loved protective styles, but taking them down was a different story. Detangling and combing my hair afterward felt like a nightmare. When I started using our products, I noticed that I began to dread that process less and less. That's when I knew we were making something worth sharing with others who might be going through the same experience. And let's just say great minds think alike because we launched Geeky Naturals soon after.
My everyday go-to is the oil blend. Since I spend a lot of time in protective styles, I’m able to oil my scalp regularly and avoid that dry, ashy look. Geeky Naturals has also helped me achieve the volume I’ve always wanted, and I’m excited to show that off more.
I've had natural hair my whole life, but only started taking intentional care of it in the last 10 years. My motivation was wanting to see myself wearing my natural hair more often instead of relying on extensions all the time. Combing and styling my hair was such a struggle in the beginning. It felt like so much work having to deal with a "chifuso" everyday.
Our Shea butter changed that for me. Not only does it keep my hair nourished and moisturized, but it also leaves my hair softer, making it easier to manage all while adding more volume. Now my goal is to grow my hair to waist length.
I hope that soon we'll expand our range to include more products that create a whole washday hair routine, from pre-poo to the final styling, all with Geeky Naturals.
I’ve been natural for almost 9 years, and it’s truly been a rollercoaster, especially in the early years. Finding a routine and products that worked for my hair, and then staying consistent with them, was a journey on its own. But once I started to see the bigger picture of what my hair could be and the potential it had, I committed to that journey and never looked back.
Some years I thrive at retaining length, and other years it feels like I’m constantly dealing with split ends and dry hair. Over time, I’ve realized that my hair thrives most when I take matters into my own hands and take care of it myself. One of my favourite ways to do this is using Our Hemp Shea. It melts effortlessly in my hands before I even apply it, and it locks in moisture, helping to protect my ends from breakage.
My hope is that more people get to experience our products for themselves and realize that the only limits to hair growth are the ones we set for ourselves. The sky is the limit! or in this case, the floor.
The last time I relaxed my hair was over 15 years ago... and the journey of learning to love my hair since hasn't always been an easy one. When I first started taking care of my hair, I didn't see much representation for textures like mine... and even when I did, the hair was much longer and more fitting of society's beauty standards. My Co-founders changed that for me when we created a sisterhood of sharing about our hair, struggles included. Community really does go a long way, which is why one of our priorities as a brand is to make sure you feel seen and heard!
Late in October 2023, I decided to embark on a new journey... microlocs. That came with its own challenges, but I'm so proud that our products have continued to work for my hair even in this phase of my Natural hair journey, and I'm confident our products will do the same for you, regardless of where you may be in yours.
