About Us

Our Mission

Geauga Mama Dogs and Pups is a private, independent, non-profit (501c3) group focused on the care and rescue of pregnant dogs, mom dogs with litters, and puppies under six months old. Our rescues come from all over Ohio and the surrounding states. We provide a comfortable safe environment for pregnant dogs to give birth and for mom dogs to care for their puppies. Our goal is to give each Mama dog and each puppy that comes into our care the nutrition, medical support, and love needed to become a healthy happy family pet.

What We Do

Our program is entirely volunteer based, including the board members and director. We have no staff and no physical shelter. What we do have is over 120 dedicated volunteers who make our program work. A team of dedicated volunteer drivers bring needy dogs and pups to us on a weekly basis. We have volunteers who are equipped to care for pregnant moms and litters; we have volunteers who are experts in bottle-feeding orphaned puppies; and we have a large core of volunteer fosters who take pups into their homes, typically in pairs, to give them the love and care they need to become healthy and adoptable. Our partner animal protective leagues provide spay and neuter services to ensure that there will be no more unwanted pregnancies. Last year, working with our adoption partners, we were able to give over 1600 dogs and pups a chance at their best life.

Why We Do This

Through no fault of their own, many pregnant female dogs are living in the most destitute of situations. They are living on the street as strays trying to survive, or abandoned by irresponsible owners, breeding and repeatedly raising puppies without proper medical care or adequate food. This often results in the spread of diseases and extensive suffering for both the moms and the puppies. Some have had no human contact and others have been treated with the utmost cruelty in their short lives. Dog pounds and shelters are simply not equipped to provide mom dogs with the care they need, nor are they safe places for young puppies before they have been vaccinated to protect them from common diseases. We collaborate with a wide range of facilities, other rescue groups, county dog wardens, animal control officers, private citizens and animal protective leagues to fill this need. All the mom dogs and puppies who come to us need extensive medical and nutritional support. They also need socialization and love to learn how to be part of a human family. Without the kind of care that we provide, these animals often end up abandoned or euthanized.

Our Funding

As a private non-profit organization, Geauga Mama Dogs and Pups does not receive any government funding. Our expenses, including food and supplements, medication and vaccinations, equipment and supplies and veterinary care, are partially funded by the generous donations of our supporters and friends. Remaining funds and contributions often come from our dedicated volunteers and board. Without these donations we would not be able to save as many animals as we do.
