DON'T shave when you arrive. DO shave that morning
DON'T arrive late! DO arrive a minimum of 90 minutes before game time.
DO call if you run into a problem or will be late.
DO have access to everyone's phone number on the crew for that game. Get it off Abriter
DO polish your shoes BEFORE you arrive. DON'T polish them during the pre-game!
DO wear a clean uniform. This includes your HAT! Wash your hat if there are visible sweat stains.
DO pack your bag the night before. Make sure you have everything 2 flags, writing utensil, a game card, whistle (2 would be great), necessary bean bags (Back Judges need one for fumbles , momentum, and marking out of bounds spot and a blue one for marking end of kicks), pants, shirt, undershirt, down indicator, black socks, ReadyRef (back judges), chain clips (Linesman), black belt, watch (Back Judges for keeping game time), and shoes. If you have more than one of something, pack it. When it gets colder, pack both long and short sleeve uniforms.
If you plan to shower after the game, DO bring necessary toiletries, shower shoes, and a towel.
During pre-game, DO be engaged in the conversation. You don't have to talk, but actively listen by making eye contact with the speaker, nodding as he makes a point, and ready to answer any questions.
DO be familiar with your position responsibilities in the mechanics manual.
DON'T wear earrings or any bluetooth technology on or in the ear while on the field.
DO hustle at all times. Hustling during the play will help you be in the correct area to make a call or no-call.
DON'T throw a flag and say, "I've got what he's got." DO tell the Referee exactly what you have (i.e. Encroachment, Illegal Snap, etc.). If you are having trouble remembering the exact term, describe the actions which are illegal and the crew will help out.
DON'T officiate with Saturday or Sunday rules. DO know what is unique to High School rules. This can only be accomplished by studying the rule book.
If you are unsure, DO ask.
When you throw your flag, DO be able to defend why you are throwing the flag.
DO be ready to keep up with your fouls so you can report them at the end of the game.
DO hustle off the field with the crew at the end of the game.
DO write down the time outs for each team and the time they were called.
DO write down the numbers/name of the team members/non-players who have an Unsportsmanlike foul called on them.
At the end of the first and third quarter, DO write down the down, distance, and yard line of the line of scrimmage.
