Many communities are turning to community land trusts as a way to build power, stop gentrification + displacement, and protect land for community, not for profit.
In 1969, the first CLT, New Communities, Inc. was formed in Southwest Georgia. Today, there are over 600 CLTs worldwide, and about 300 in the US. This is a growing movement.
CLTs have a long history in Massachusetts, with Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative and Valley Community Land Trust being early and enduring examples. See this CLT Directory for more.
